Local Golf Report: Chambers Bay, here I come

From Tee to Green...

There’s a lot of good golf going on right now on the home front. But I must admit, my mind is a long, long way from Prairie Farms Golf Course or Beaver Creek Golf Course.

Instead, I’m thinking only about Chambers Bay in Tacoma, Washington. Because in a little over 24 hours, that’s where I’ll be, walking the monstrous hills and sand dunes of what I think is one of the most amazing golf courses I’ve ever seen. But I won’t have a bag on my back or a club in my hand. No, that will be the world’s greatest golfers who will be doing that this week at Chambers Bay as the U.S. Open takes center stage.

For my part, I’ll be observing, and eventually, reporting back to my golf readers what I’m seeing and doing with my days at the biggest golf tournament in the world. No, I won’t be writing stories about who’s winning and who’s losing, and scoring and all of that. We all get our sports information in real time now, and there’s so many ways to get U.S. Open results that you will all have that information by the time you read my daily report each afternoon or evening.

Instead, I’ll be reporting on anything interesting that I observe, see or hear. And because it’s the U.S. Open and because it’s my first time at one, or any professional golf tournament for that matter, I’m sure I’m going to have plenty to write about and say in the days ahead.

So, if any of you are interested, I’ll be publishing a daily report from Chambers Bay, in the Thursday and Friday print editions, and online exclusives on Saturday and Sunday night. I’ll also have a final golf report from my experience at the U.S. Open in next week’s Havre Daily News. And don’t forget, I’ll be tweeting anything I consider interesting that you might not see on TV and on the Internet, as well.

But as I mentioned earlier, there’s plenty to write about on the local golf scene as well.

Last week marked the end of the first half of the 2015 men’s league season at Prairie Farms, and that means eight teams are now locked into the season-ending playoffs. Dan Wagner Plumbing captured the first half title Tuesday night, with Korb Construction, Northern Edge and Hole 19 also making it into the playoff field. D.A. Davidson won a close race Wednesday night, while Aaron’s, Master Sports and Bear Paw Credit Union also qualified for the playoffs.

Last Tuesday saw Northern Edge earn high-team honors with 22.5 points. The team was composed of Nate Baltrusch, Kyle Sheppard, Christian Oberquell and Chad Spangler. Matt Hedstrom fired an outstanding 3-under par 33 for low gross, while Spangler was low net with a 31.5. Last Wednesday night saw D.A. Davidson get high team with a whopping 27.5 points. No wonder the squad, composed of Jim Wirt, Frank Peterson, Ric Floren and Jordy Donoven skyrocketed to the top of the standings. Way to go guys. Jeremy Jensen shot a 2-under 34 for low gross, while Dax Nebel was low net with a 28.5.

In ladies league last Thursday night, Prairie Farms scored 24 points for high-team honors. The team was made up of Anna Toner, Kristi Peterson, Sarah Spangler and Amy Brown. Ali Ward shot a sizzling even-par 36 for low gross, while Ristina Wilting, Joyce Donoven and Jill Reber all tied for low net with a 33.5.

On the tournament front, I was told a great time was had by all who took part in last Saturday’s NALSF Scramble at Prairie Farms. This week, another big event is on the menu. Saturday, the annual Natalie Patrick Foundation Scramble will be held, and that is another tournament which does great charitable work, helping raise funds for a number of great causes.
