June 19-23 is 'Pre-Participation Physical Week' at the Northern Montana Family Medical Center

June 19-23 is designated as the Pre-Participation Physicals Week at Northern Montana Family Medical Center.

The Montana High School Association is the governing body of high school athletics in the state of Montana. MHSA requires that all children submit the findings of a pre-participation physical yearly prior to the start of the activity. The MHSA Handbook requires that a physical exam must be performed for each student in order for that student to be considered eligible for participation in an association Contest. Physical exams must be completed prior to the first practice. This examination must be certified by a licensed medical professional acting within the scope and limitations of his or her practice. This certification is valid for a period of one school year. A physical examination conducted before May 1 is not valid for participation for the following school year.

"Aside from the mandatory ruling from the MHSA, yearly exams are an excellent way to track your child's growth and meet their preventative health needs," said Dr. Karrie Lien, family medicine provider for Northern Montana Family Medical Center. "Unless your child has had an illness warranting a visit to see their primary care provider during the year, your child has not been seen by a medical professional for the year. A pre-participation physical can help you find out about and deal with health problems that might interfere with your participation in a sport, as well as any general issues that may be of concern."

In addition to establishing a good medical history, the health care provider doing this exam may ask questions about any past sports injuries as they may pertain to the child's current ability to participate. It is generally a good idea to have the child's physical done about six weeks before their sports season begins to give enough time to follow up on any issues if necessary.

Parents may schedule their child's exam by calling the Family Medicine Providers at the Northern Montana Family Medical Center at 265-5408. Forms are available at the MHSA website at http://www.mhsa.org/page/show/2287372-miscellaneous-forms. Forms need to be filled out and brought to the exam.
