Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Reid Kato

Learning hoops skills is fun for Kato

While much of the youth sports activity recently has been focused on baseball, it’s also time for summer camps and this week, the Montana State University-Northern Lights, have been hosting their middle school boys basketball camp.

The camp which started Monday, will run through Thursday this week and is being put on by long-time head coach Shawn Huse, as well as some of his staff and players. The camp has kids that range from sixth grade to eighth and around 50 kids total in attendance.

As usual, there is a mix of fun things, such as basketball bowl, a game where players roll a basketball toward a single pin at center court, as well as competitions and the practice of basic fundamentals. The camp starts at 8 a.m. and runs daily until 9 p.m., with breaks built in for both lunch and dinner.

The morning portion of the camp tends to focus on fundamentals, with a few competitions built in such as the fastbreak league. Later in the day, there are things like shooting league, 3-on-3, 5-on-5 and other tournaments. Standings are also kept for the 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 leagues, with camp championships to be decided Thursday.

Among the 50 some campers in attendance, one of them was Reid Kato, who is a member of the Cavaliers for the 5-on-5 tournament this week. Kato, 11, will be attending Havre Central next year and will be looking to play middle school basketball for the first time, although he has played on travel teams in the past.

Kato was just one of the many campers enjoying the four-day camp inside the Armory Gymnasium and Tuesday, the Havre Daily News caught up with him for five questions.
