Eagles soar past Ponies

September 4, 2018

The Havre High football team went on the road last Friday night, hoping to upset arch-rival Lewistown, But, the Eagles, who came into the game 0-1, had other ideas and the Blue Pones ran into a buzzsaw.

The Eagles, who have one of the best quarterback-wide receiver tandems in the Eastern A, scored early and often in the first two quarters, racking up 41 points in the first half of a 47-6 win over the Ponies. HHS is now 1-1 on the season and will travel to Laurel Friday night.

“Lewistown, they are just a really good football team,” HHS head coach Ryan Gatch said. “Their wide receivers were just better than our corners. It didn’t matter what kind of coverage we ran at them, it was a track meet and they got three dudes and we couldn’t catch them.”

Mitchell Norslien, who led the Eagles to a win last season in Havre, threw two touchdowns in the first quarter, including a 48-yarder to Tanner Trafton, as Lewistown built a 14-0 edge in the opening stanza. In the second quarter, the touchdowns kept coming. Norslien threw two more touchdowns and after Lewistown also added a rushing touchdown, Trafton returned an interception return 40 yards for a touchdown and the rout was on at 41-0.

“They came out and did a really great job against us,” Gatch said, “and then we had some dropped passes and things that didn’t go our way. On that interception, Reese (Bulkley) was hit when he threw it and they ran it back for a touchdown. So we also made some mistakes that made it snowball on us a little bit.”

In the fourth quarter, the Ponies finally found the zone on a two-yard run by Mason Dionne, in his first touchdown of the season. Dionne finished the game with 24 yards on nine rushing attempts. He also completed a pass for 52 yards to Ethan Roberts, who finished the game with six receptions for 81 yards. Bulkley, in his second career start at quarterback for HHS, completed 7-of-11 passes for 40 yards. He was also intercepted three times. Bulkley also ran six times for 11 yards in the loss. On the other side of the field, Lewistown attempted 12 passes in the game and completed 11 of them for 243 yards and five touchdowns.

When it was all said and done, Lewistown finished with 311 yards of total offense compared to 145 for Havre. The Eagles were limited to 68 yards rushing, which was a good sign for the Havre defense, although Lewistown still out-gained the Ponies on the ground, who were limited to just 53 rushing yards and 92 yards through the air. Leading the way defensively for HHS was Caleb Allestad, who finished with 10 tackles and two tackles for loss. Roberts added two tackles, while both Bradyn Winchell and Kellen Detrick added one tackle for loss each.

“We will get better this week,” Gatch said. “Obviously, we didn’t play great football against Lewistown, but we still did some good things. Our run defense was pretty solid against them and we did a pretty good job protecting our quarterback and I was happy with our overall effort.”

The Ponies (1-1) will head to Laurel this week to the face the 1-1 Locomotives, who are coming off a last-second loss to Miles City. The start time between the two teams is set for Friday night at 7 p.m.
