ELF drive a success, exceeds last year's total

The manager of the Havre Food Bank said the staff wants to thank the community for helping to make this year's Everybody Loves Firefighters food drive even better than last year.

Samantha Nimmick, director of the food bank, said they were able to raise 6,199 pounds of food Wednesday and Thursday nights which exceeded their total from last year's E.L.F. drive.

"I was worried after the first night," Nimmick said. "We only raised 1,877 pounds of food. But the second night we raised 4,322 pounds."

Nimmick added that the volunteer turnout was great. There were some new volunteers this year as well as some returning. One of the returning ones, she said, was a volunteer who had been helping out for the past 11 years.

Thursday still proved to be a difficult day to get volunteers to come out, Nimmick added.

"We were calling more people and asking others to come and help," she said.

Nimmick added that her husband helped out as well and put their kids in the car and drove down streets with volunteers.

"We're just very grateful to the community, volunteers and firefighters," Nimmick added. "We look forward to doing this again next year."
