HPS Education Foundation presents 2019 scholarships

Havre Public Schools Education Foundation recently held the presentation ceremony for the 2019 scholarships offered by several donors.

The ceremony was with the Havre High School Academic Awards May 15. The Board of Directors said they were very pleased to award 32 scholarships totaling $40,350.

The $500 HPSEF Memorial Scholarship, this year in memory of Charles Williams and Stan Joy, was presented by the Williams Family to Jordan Jarman.

The $500 HHS Blewett Wrestling Scholarship was presented to Austin Ratliff by HPSEF Treasurer Todd Hanson.

Two Gene Gabriel Memorial scholarships, $500 each, were awarded, to Noah Molitor and Abigail Morse by Jim Gabriel.

Scott Miller presented the $500 Howard Miller Memorial Scholarship to Devyn Solomon.

The Friends of Music/Eunice DeRosa Memorial Scholarships were awarded to John Klein and Marcee Murphy, $500 each and presented by Stephannie Klein and Margie DeRosa Deppmeier.

The Elliott family provided funds for a $2,000 Dr. James & Kay Elliott Memorial Scholarship, presented to Tysen Sangrey by family friend Kevin Lamey.

Paulette Cronk presented the scholarship offered by PEO AZ Chapter for $500 to Kaitlin Anderson.

Paij Peterson from Northstar High School was presented the $750 C. Lowell and Vivian D. Purdy Memorial Scholarship.

The $750 Sue Swan Community Service Scholarship, funded by Sue's children in her honor, was presented by Sue to Mackenzie Walker.

The Sons of Norway Heritage Scholarship for $750 was awarded to August Eacker.

Kevin Lamey presented the $500. Wells Lamey Blue Pony Pride Scholarship to Tysen Sangrey.

The $500 Tom Lafond State Farm Up and Coming Entrepreneurial Scholarship was presented by Angie Twombly to John Klein.

Dorothy Bradbury and Bill Bradbury presented the $1,000 Alfred & Catherine Bradbury Memorial Scholarship to Noah Molitor.

The $1,500 Bart Nolan Memorial Scholarship was presented by Bart's aunt Julee Christian to Devyn Solomon.

PEO Chapter V member, Denise Ladenburg presented their $1,000. award to Courtney Henderson.

The Tillie Patterson Foundation Memorial Scholarship was presented to Caprice Gobin and Devyn Solomom, each receiving an $8,000 award. The Patterson award provides $4,000 for fall semester 2019 and $4,000. for spring semester 2020 for each recipient.

Havre High School alumni also are helping today's students with college expenses. Three classes generously offered scholarships.

The HHS Class of 1968 awarded two scholarships of $500 each. Recipients were Natalie Verploegen and Marcee Murphy.

The HHS Class of 1976 awarded a $600 scholarship to John Klein.

The HHS Class of 1970 presented their second scholarship and classmates are currently raising funds to award a third scholarship for 2020. Class members, Allan Ost and Marilyn Vaughn Thackeray made the $2,000. award presentation to Austin Ratliff.

In the cases which the donor was unable to present the award the President of the Board Lorraine Verploegen presented the scholarship.

A few new donors offered scholarships this year.

An alumnus who left Havre many years ago fondly remembered his years at Havre High School and donated funds which make it possible for the Foundation to offer scholarships. The Henry "Hal" Gilmore Memorial Scholarship awarded the first of three this spring, a $1,500 award to Trey Murphy.

The foundation members said they are very pleased to welcome the Natalie Patrick foundation to its list of donors. They offered two memorial scholarships but when the they looked at the application of the seven students that met all the application requirement's they wanted to reward them all. Instead of two they awarded seven. Brett Patrick and Ricky Brown presented a $1,000 award to Aarron Thompson and Hailey Azure, as well as, $500 awards to Emily Borst, Evan Davison, Marcee Murphy, Kinzee Peterson and James Ammon Lines.

The last of the new donors is Doris Roberts. She donated funds to offer scholarships for many years to come, the Wayne Thurston Memorial Scholarship. She wanted to fund scholarships in memory of her husband's passion for education, both in teaching and continually learning throughout his lifetime. Doris and Wayne have been involved in the Hi-Line Amateur Radio Club for several years, with the club's assistance a recipient, Hailey Azure, was selected and the $2,000 scholarship presented by club member Heather Hinckley.

Following the ceremony, HPSEF hosted a luncheon to honor the recipients and donors. The foundation thanked Debbie Otto and HHS Food Service for the delicious meal, Jimmi Lynn Brown for use of the library and taking photos to capture the recipients as they received their certificate, John Ita and the HHS Selection Committee, for their dedication and hours spent selecting 11 of the award recipients.

The HPSEF Board of Directors said they are very proud that so many donors offer their generous awards through the foundation scholarship program.

The current members of the board are: Lorraine Verploegen, president; Kyle Leeds, vice-president; Karla Bolken, secretary; Todd Hanson, treasurer; and board members Becky Toth, Julie Monson, Cathie Bradbury and Kevin Holmes. Superintendent Andy Carlson is an ex-officio member, Wayne Bolken is the HPS Trustee member and Cheryl Morse is Executive Director.
