Skylights win on day one in Phoenix

Montana State University-Northern head women's basketball coach Chris Mouat knew that his Skylights were going to have a long three days in Arizona given the tough competition at the Phoenix Frontier Challenge.

And on day one, the No. 11 Skylights had a fight on their hands in a 50-40 win over Northern New Mexico. The Skylights, who moved up three spots in the new NAIA Coaches Poll this week improved to 10-0 ahead of today's game with Bethel University.

Northern's NAIA leading defense did a number on Northern New Mexico, allowing them to shoot just 25 percent from the field and 20 percent from the 3-point-line. The Skylights, who had to overcome 25 turnovers in the game, also forced 18 turnovers and won the rebounding edge, 48-23.

Offensively, MSU-N did struggle, shooting just 34 percent and making only two threes. However, an 18-8 lead early on helped offset the shooting struggles later in the game. The Skylights also got a huge performance from junior Peyton Kehr, who scored 20 points and made both of their triples. Hailey Nicholson also had a monster outing for Northern with a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double, while Tiara Gilham chipped in with eight points and eight boards.

Northern (10-0) will look to play better offensively today when the Skylights take on 15th-ranked Bethel in a NAIA Top 25 showdown. The Skylights wrap up play in Phoenix Friday afternoon.
