Obituary - Shirley J. Carey

Shirley J. Carey, 89, passed away due to natural causes at her Havre residence on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

Cremation has taken place, and private family graveside services will be held at a later date.

Shirley's family has suggested memorial donations be made in her memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Shirley was born on September 7, 1931, in Great Falls to Robert and Mary (Bigham) Johnson. Shirley was raised in Fort Benton, graduating from Fort Benton High School in 1949. On October 19, 1956, Shirley married Robert L. Carey in Fort Benton, and the couple moved around for a bit before settling in Havre, where they raised their three children. There, Shirley worked hard, caring for her home and family.

Shirley was a soft-spoken, gentle woman who enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, baking, and cross-stitching. She loved flowers and was a member of Fifth Avenue Christian Church for many years. In her younger years Shirley taught Sunday school, volunteered on church committees, and cooked diligently for funeral dinners. She also loved to spend time with her coffee group.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Robert Carey Sr .; parents, Robert and Mary Johnson; sisters, Phyllis Lenington Wood and Beverly Birkland; and brother, Robert Johnson.

Shirley is survived by her children, Robert Carey, Jr. of Havre, Carla (William) Collins of Payette, ID, and Chris Carey of Burley, ID; two grandchildren, Robert Collins of Fruitland, ID, and Mark Collins of Payette, ID; and many friends and extended family members who loved her.
