Hi-Line Football: Area teams open 2022 football season with wins

Hi-Line Football Roundup

This past weekend, Hi-Line football finally made its return. As the season begins, every team will be looking to find its identity and set itself apart from the rest of the competition.

The Big Sandy six-man football team came into the season looking to make a run at a state title. On Friday night at home, the Pioneers looked like they will be up to that task as they defeated White Sulphur Springs, 46-6, to open the season.

The Pioneers jumped out of the gates hot to take control of the game. In the first quarter, Braydon Cline threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kody Strutz to give the Pioneers the lead. Later in the quarter, Cline then threw a five-yard touchdown to Wylee Snapp to increase the lead.

Cline continued to spread the wealth as he found Lane Demontiney for a 60-yard touchdown pass to push the advantage. The Pioneers then ended the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown run from Rusty Gasvoda to push the lead to 30-0.

Even with the big lead, the Pioneers continued to roll. In the second quarter, Cooper Taylor ran the ball in for an eight-yard score. Snapp then made a play on defense with a safety to start the third quarter.

Later in the quarter, Taylor scored on a 61-yard kickoff return to push the lead to 46-0. The Hornets finally scored with a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but it was far too late to make it interesting.

The Chester-Joplin-Inverness six-man football team opened the season with a 59-12 victory over Wibaux on the road Saturday afternoon. After Wibaux scored in the first quarter with a one-yard run from Wyatt Ree, the Hawks took control.

Braden Mattson got the scoring started for the Hawks with a 36-yard touchdown run. Then on defense, Blake Harmon returned a fumble 52 yards for a score to give CJI a 14-6 lead.

After a 12-yard touchdown run from Ree to start the second quarter, the Hawks responded in force. Mattson got it going with a 35-yard pass to Harmon for a score. Adam Grammar then scored himself with a 26-yard touchdown run. Nate Nelson then got in on the action with a 16-yard touchdown run to give CJI a 38-12 lead at the half.

Coming out of halftime, the Hawks made sure to put the game away. Nelson got it started with a 54-yard touchdown run. Grammar then scored again with a 26-yard score on the ground. The Hawks then added another touchdown to put the game away for good.

Not all the teams on the Hi-Line got off to a strong start this season. On Saturday in Centerville, the North Star six-man football team opened the year with a 28-7 loss to Centerville.

The Miners got off to a strong start as they took a 14-0 lead in the first half. The Knights finally scored in the third quarter, but the Miners scored another pair of touchdowns in the second half to pull away for the victory.

The Chinook eight-man football team opened the year with a competitive contest against Culbertson at home on Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys gave the Sugarbeeters a good fight, but Chinook held on for the 38-32 victory to start the year.

After making it to the semifinals last season, the Fort Benton eight-man football team looked to start this season on the right foot. On the road this past Saturday, the Longhorns got the year started with a 42-28 win over Park City.

Under new head coach Trent Woodward, the Harlem eight-man football team also got the season started on the road this past Saturday. Thanks to four takeaways by the defense, the Wildcats defeated Poplar, 26-12, to open the year.

With the first week of high school football in the books, many teams now have a better idea of what they are capable of heading into the rest of the year. With the way some teams played this past week, it should be another interesting football season on the Hi-Line.

Hi-Line football will return this Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
