    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 16, 2019

There are few things that feel more like summer than attending the fair and this week, people from Havre and the surrounding areas will get that chance with the Great Northern Fair set to open Wednesday. However, the 2019 Great Northern Fair will be about much more than great food and fun events. It will also offer sports fans unique opportunities that go beyond some of the things we normally see. Of course, the rodeo is always going to be part of the festivities and that's...

  • Northstars earn key split

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 15, 2019

The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team had a number of reasons to be motivated to beat Vauxhall last Saturday. But chief among them was the fact that it was senior day for six players who were playing their final games at Legion Field. That proved to be the only motivation that the Northstars needed as they managed a split with first-place Vauxhall, taking the first game of the doubleheader 9-7, before dropping the second 7-5. Despite falling behind 5-0 in the seco...

  • One last time at Legion

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 11, 2019

The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team went on the road Wednesday and while the club missed a shot at a two-game sweep of rival Lewistown, Havre did what it needed, earning a split and keeping its hopes alive for second place in the Northern A District. Both teams entered Wednesday's doubleheader in Lewistown with identical 11-9 records within the district. A sweep would have put the Northstars only two games behind the Redbirds with just two to go. Thanks to a bri...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 11, 2019

While basketball isn't always synonymous with the summertime, there has been plenty of hoops action going on inside the Armory Gymnasium this week and really all summer long as Montana State University-Northern Skylights hosted their annual camp this week. The Skylights hosted their youth camp and had players in grades 4-6 in their gym this week and one of the players in attendance was 10-year-old Bree Hanson, who just happens to be the daughter of former Skylight Jena...

  • Northstars hit the road again

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 10, 2019

At times, the schedule has been unpredictable for the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team during the 2019 season and the weather has played a big role in that uncertainty. Of course, in Montana, that is to be expected, especially during the spring months of the season, simply because of the unpredictable weather during that time of year. However, the Northstars ran into more weather-related issues Tuesday as the team's scheduled doubleheader against Northern A...

  • Northstars split with Miners

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 9, 2019

After getting swept on the road at Vauxhall last Wednesday, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team couldn't afford to let the same thing happen at home Saturday against the Lethbridge Miners. Yet, after losing the first game of the Northern A District doubleheader 3-2 and falling behind 2-0 in the first inning of the second game, a split looked like anything but a sure thing. Thankfully for the Northstars, Tyrel Kjersem found his groove and picked up the victory, h...

  • Northstars excited to return to Legion Field

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 4, 2019

At this point in the Legion baseball season, every game is important. But when the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team hosts Lethbridge Saturday, the No. 2 spot in the Northern A district could be on the line. Starting the week, both the Northstars and the Miners had 10 wins within the district. Yet at 10-6, Havre held a two-game edge in the loss column with Lethbridge at 10-8. Havre was swept at Vauxhall on Wednesday night though, so that will make the...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 3, 2019

With eight games remaining in Northern A District schedule, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team finds itself sitting in second place in the district standings. Yet, holding that position won't be easy, especially with four of the last eight games against Vauxhall, the Northstars' opponent tonight in Canada. The Spurs lead the district and playing a doubleheader at their place should give the Northstars a good idea of where the team stands heading into the stretc...

  • Another weekend of fatspitch fun for all

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 1, 2019

With seven teams playing and a number of former Havre athletic greats, the Shaina's Challenge Fastpitch softball tournament was a success once again this past weekend at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, even if a team from Havre didn't end up taking home the hardware. The team that emerged from the seven-team field victorious was Tire Rama of Missoula, which knocked off Valley Furniture, another team from the Missoula area. Tire Rama scored 12 runs in the first inning of the...

  • Henry Construction wins dramatic title

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jun 26, 2019

In sports, there are few finishes more exciting than a walk-off home run and Wednesday night, at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, that's exactly what the fans in attendance got to see. The Havre Youth Softball Association was hosting the city championship for its B League, which is for players in fifth and sixth grade and the matchup between Henry Construction and Brandon's went down to the wire before it was ultimately decided by a two-run, walk-off, inside-the-park home run...

  • Northstars sweep Cardinals in Conrad

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jun 26, 2019

Due to weather and a change in the schedule, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team paid a visit to the Tri-County Cardinals Tuesday instead of earlier in the season. When the Northstars hosted their Northern A rival at Legion Field last month, they swept them and Tuesday, on the road, the result was the same, as Havre won the first game 7-6 and followed it up with a 12-6 victory to win their third in a row. The Northstars are now 18-11 overall and 10-6 in the...

  • Northstars look to keep pace on the road

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jun 25, 2019

Championship teams share of a lot of characteristics, but one that is just about universal is being able to win games on the road. And if the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team is going to make a run at the regular season championship in the Northern A District, winning on the road will be a requirement, especially as the team is in the midst of playing 10 of 12 games on the road. Starting last weekend with road trips to Fort Macleod and Medicine Hat, the...

  • Northstars grab key road wins in Canada

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jun 24, 2019

Winning on the road is never easy and this past weekend, that’s a lesson that the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team learned once again. With a 6-4 record in the Northern A District heading into play Saturday, the Northstars had a big opportunity with back-to-back doubleheaders against Fort Macleod and then Medicine Hat Sunday. The Northstars split with the two teams during a four-game homestand earlier this month and that’s exactly what happened this weekend. Hav...

The Summer can be a slow time for sports, as school is out, which means it's the offseason for just about every high school athlete. But as anyone who follows high school or even youth athletics knows, the offseason is becoming shorter and shorter and one of the great opportunities the summer can offer is the chance to attend sports-based camps, like the Havre High Volleyball Camp being hosted by HHS head coach Tamecia Jarvis and the Blue Ponies this week at the HHS...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jun 19, 2019

The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team spent last weekend playing baseball in Lewistown, only they didn't take on the Redbirds, the team from Lewistown. That's because Havre was in Lewistown for a non-district tournament in which the Northstars finished fourth. Tonight, Havre and Lewistown will be in the same town again and this time, they will go head-to-head as the two teams will meet in an important Northern A doubleheader tonight at Legion Field.
