    George Ferguson

The start to Frontier Conference play didn't go exactly how the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team planned. A close loss to Carroll College back in November coupled with a roller coaster of a win over Dickinson State on Thursday night was not exactly how the Skylights wanted to be playing at this point in the season. But on Friday night, Northern turned it all around. The Skylights put together an impressive all-around performance, beating Rocky...

The Central A Ponies scored 247.5 points to earn the No. 1 finish, and was barely challenged by No. 2 Choteau with 217.5. Daniel Horton

And the Central A Ponies did just that, as they improved their overall record to 2-5 and their conference record to 1-2. • MSU-N Notebook: MSU-N's Tresch does what shooters do

    George Ferguson

Nikki Tresch is a pure shooter. It's what she does and what she's really good at. And coming into this week's Frontier Conference home stand, Tresch was averaging over 16 points per game, and was one of the top 3-point shooters in the Frontier conference. However, in a close, 59-56 win over the Dickinson State Blue Hawks on Thursday night in Havre, Tresch was bottled up by the DSU defense, as she was held to seven points and no three's. Of course, as a senior leader Tresch...

The Havre High girls basketball team was hungry to get back out on the court after a two-week break. After a conference win on the road over the Lewistown Golden Eagles on Friday, and a home win over the non-conference Shelby Coyotes on Saturday, the Ponies improved to 4-3 overall and an impressive 3-0 in Central A play. Joyce Swartzendruber

Editor: The clock is ticking on an "endangered species" listing of the greater sage-grouse. If U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decides to list the bird in 2015, it will mean huge changes to Montana and the western states where the grouse has historically lived. Ranchers may have their federal grazing land leases curtailed. Oil and gas development may be stalled. Other road and energy development may be stopped in certain areas. The USFWS's Conservation Objectives: Final Report itemizes what threats to the sage-grouse remain....

Commencement ceremonies are always touching events as grads prepare to end one phase of their life and begin another. Thus was the case Saturday when graduates took part in ceremonies at Montana State University-Northern. Speaker Paul Tuss took an unusual turn Saturday when he shunned some of the traditional advice given to grads and thanked the students for enlivening life in Havre. That was very appropriate. Hopefully not just the graduates, but the rest of us will listen to what Tuss said. Student athletes have given us a...

JOSH LEDERMAN, LAURAN NEERGAARD, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama supports requiring girls younger than 17 to see a doctor before buying the morning-after pill. But fighting that battle in court comes with its own set of risks. A federal judge in New York on Friday ordered the Food and Drug Administration to lift age restrictions on the sale of emergency contraception, ending the requirement that buyers show proof they're 17 or older if they want to buy it without a prescription. The ruling accused the Obama administration in no uncertain terms of l...
