  • Pastor's Corner: Loving God - Loving one another more

    Updated Jan 28, 2022

At the beginning of each year, I like to remind our local church folks of why we exist as a church and what we're all about. I did that Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022. Here are some excerpts from that message: Mark 12:28-31 - 28 Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all? 29 Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God,...

The Havre High girls basketball team has dominated conference play in the Northeast A so far this season. The Blue Ponies have won each conference game by an average of 35.5 points a game so they have not faced much adversity in conference play. A long road trip might provide a challenge for the Ponies this weekend when they head all the way to Billings to play Lewistown at the Metra Saturday. "It's going to be an awful long day so I would expect us to be ready to play a game...

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Jan 28, 2022

The Hill County Commission has reversed its decision to change their workers’ compensation insurance provider over to PayneWest Insurance, which was voted on two weeks ago, and stay with Koefod Agency, prompting a heated discussion about the reversal. Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson said upon reviewing their decision to switch to PayneWest, the commission felt that they did not give Koefod a chance to speak with the insurance committee and make a case for their agency. They made a motion to switch back to them for w...

  • View from the North 40: You can temper steel with fire, too

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 28, 2022

Horses are psychic — if you don’t believe it, just watch them be jerks about it. I just spent three days researching, reading, interviewing and writing about livestock predation due to grizzlies, wolves, mountain lions and coyotes — which is the technical way of saying I was drowning in the details about large, wild meat-eaters making a meal out of livestock. The day I finished with the project, my horses spent the entire time I was out feeding them, in the dark, spook...

  • Special session wrong for PSC districts

    Updated Jan 28, 2022

For the past eight year I served on the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, six as chair. When combined with my eight years in the House, I have spent more time evaluating the Public Service Commission’s regulatory duties and commissioners than anyone in the legislature. The PSC consists of five members, each elected from a distinct geographic Montana district, whose primary charge is keeping your lights on and power costs low. Previous efforts made by the legislature to redraw the PSC district boundaries to c...

  • Big Sky legend ready for a new start

    Kason Clark|Updated Jan 28, 2022

Jerome Souers needs little introduction to Treasure State football fans. Over the course of his 21 years coaching the Northern Arizona University football program, Souers won 123 games, the most in Big Sky history. He will now look to lead the Montana State University-Northern football program to success as he takes over the program this fall. If he is going to turn it around, he knows he will need the help of the community. “We need everybody that’s on campus to re-...

  • Lights fall in overtime, Skylights fall behind at Western

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 28, 2022

The Montana State University-Northern Skylights and Montana Western Bulldogs brought frustratingly long losing streaks into their Frontier Conference matchup Thursday night. Unfortunately for Northern, it was Western who snapped its streak. The Skylights lost to Montana Western 69-54 Thursday in Dillon. The Skylights started off rough getting down 23-13 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs kept a steady lead going into halftime 39-25. Northern cut the lead down to 10 a couple...

  • Neutral Fight: Pony boys take on No. 1 Lewistown in Billings

    Kason Clark|Updated Jan 28, 2022

Now the Blue Ponies hope to carry that momentum into their conference game against Lewistown at the Metra in Billings this Saturday. Lemer went the distance in the match, but Kuda won, 6-2, for a decision that gave Glasgow a 3-0...

  • Out Our Way: Mama hears! - Psalm 64:1-4

    Updated Jan 28, 2022

Out our way, theology can be found in the strangest places. Maybe that is why some shepherds and cowpunchers are also pastors and theologians. God speaks to those who will listen - and also listens to those who speak. More than once, Charlie and I have found a stray calf far from the herd that somehow wandered off. Now while it is true that the pastures are mostly fenced and the predators are seldom prowling the area, they have been known to get in. I have shared how Doc and...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Jan 28, 2022

You know, Lord, what fun to dine with tiny tots (not their real names): Ida, 18 months old and big brother, Evan, age 4, and their grandparents. Both tots so cute and well mannered, fresh from heaven, curious, just learning their way around the world. Ida is learning to talk. One can only imagine what this bright eyed, puppy-tailed tot will be when she's 2! Ida was more interested in folks around her than in eating, even when grandma tempted her with a tasty bite: "Open wide...
