  • From the North 40: Peasantry without drudgery

    Pam Burke|Updated May 12, 2015

I was born to be a peasant. Well, OK, not one of those indentured, do whatever the boss-man tells me to do kind of serfs. I have it on good authority from just about every one of my family members and my husband, who shall remain nameless, that I don’t follow orders very well. But there was a class of landowning peasants with whom I would have fit in nicely. I come fully equipped by Mother Nature with large peasantish hands, feet and muscles, along with the broad shoulders a...

  • Celebrating history: Lots of news about buildings

    Updated May 8, 2015

Emily Mayer The big question for this week's column is "where do I begin?" There were a lot of columns about buildings in the newspapers this week 100 years ago. I will start with the Hill County Courthouse as that is one of the major buildings celebrating a century this year, and the drama continues. This was on the front page of the May 8, 1915 issue of The Hill County Democrat, complete with misspelling and grammatical error: NEW SITE SELECTED BY BOARD OF COUNTY...

  • Letter to the Editor: Hansen, Hess views are not Havre's views

    Updated May 8, 2015

Editor: Kris Hansen and Stephanie Hess have a lot in common. Both are from Illinois and both are relatively recent transplants to Havre, where they share a house. Both also inexplicably convinced a majority of recent voters that they could better represent them in the Montana Legislature than candidates with lifelong ties and contributions to the Hi-Line. Once elected, they continued to follow a strikingly similar path. Hansen, as a state senator, and Hess, as a member of the state House, sided with the far-right wing during...

  • Letter to the Editor: Unintended pregnancy is preventable

    Updated May 8, 2015

Editor: May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, when we focus on the need to reduce teen pregnancy in our communities. If parents, youth, schools, businesses, faith leaders and health care providers join together to address teen pregnancy, we can make a difference. Each day in Montana, approximately three teens give birth. Teen childbearing has serious consequences. Parenthood is the leading reason why teen girls drop out of school. Only 40 percent of teen mothers graduate from high school, and fewer than 2 percent earn a col...

  • Out Our Way: 'Packsaddle Sam'

    Updated May 8, 2015

Out our way, folks who have been around know that you can't always judge a book by its cover. Folks can fool you by the way they talk, dress or act. Take the true story I heard from a family member about what happened to his dad, Frank, when he was still a kid growing up in Browning. Frank was a pretty good rider and had worked on some of the local ranches, so when the call went out for one of the last big cattle drives in Montana, he signed up to go. The cattle had been...

  • Pony netters looking to peak in Lewistown

    Chris Peterson|Updated May 8, 2015

Havre head tennis coach George Ferguson likes to refer to the annual Lewistown Invitational as the first round of the Central A Divisional tournament. He does so because he believes so strongly that if his Blue Ponies can play well in Lewistown, they can play well four days later when the divisional tournament starts. Now, weather permitting, that theory will be put to the test because the Ponies are headed to Lewistown for their regular season finale Saturday morning. In the...

    Chris Peterson|Updated May 8, 2015

The Havre High softball team is just one week away from playing in the tournament they have been looking forward to all season: The Central A divisionals. Yet, they still have one more weekend of regular season play left and they will spend it in the Mining City for the Laverne Combo tournament. In terms of the conference standings, the tournament, which starts today and runs through Saturday in Butte, will mean nothing. The Ponies (8-8, 5-3) have already wrapped up the...
