Athletes of the Week

Name: Jason Johnstone

Class: Senior

School: Havre

Sport: Golf

Havre senior Jason Johnstone shot a 29 on the front nine Saturday at the Chinook Golf Course, cruising to an 8-under-par 64.

Johnstone's score led a Pony team which combined for a 15-under-par score of 273.

Johnstone's 64 was three shots better than his previous best. Johnstone said he has shot 67 twice before, once at Havre's Beaver Creek Golf Course and at Cottonwood Hills Public Golf Course in Bozeman.

"For a high school kid to shoot a 7 under 29 front nine is truly remarkable," Blue Pony coach Keith Evenson said. "I can't remember anyone ever shooting that low. I don't know if his score of 64 is a record or not. But it doesn't matter. It is still a heck of an achievement"

Johnstone will take his hot shooting to the Central A Divisional Tournament Friday and Saturday in Butte.

Name: Crystal Pyrak

Class: Junior

School: Havre

Sport: Tennis

Even with the rough weather and limited practice time, Havre's Crystal Pyrak has been a steady force this season for the Blue Ponies.

Pyrak, the No. 1 seeded singles player for Havre, continued her strong play by picking up two wins last weekend against Chinook.

Pyrak defeated Chinook's Kelsey Whitney, 6-0, 6-2, and Susan Thackeray, 6-3, 6-2.

The Havre varsity girls each won all of their matches, guiding the Ponies to an easy win over the Sugarbeeters. The Havre junior varsity team also competed and won all but one match.

The Ponies have one weekend left in the regular season to fine-tune their play. They'll take to the courts Saturday in Lewistown for their last regular season tournament. The Central A divisional tournament is planned for May 17-18 in Livingston.
