Poet Michael Czarnecki is stopping at the Havre-Hill County Library tonight at 7 as he travels across the country on U.S. Highway 2 to research a book about the journey.

Czarnecki departed Houlton, Maine, on Aug. 26, starting a more than 2,500-mile trip through 11 states toward Everett, Wash. He plans to write a memoir of the trip titled "Far North, Far West," written in haibun, a Japanese literary form combining prose and haiku.

The presentation at the library will go over his trip so far.

In 1996, Czarnecki took a similar journey on U.S. Highway 20, a 3,200-mile trip from Boston to Newport, Ore. He published "Twenty Days on Route 20," also written in haibun, a year later.

Czarnecki started working as a full-time poet in 1994 at age 43. His most recent book, "Simple Life, Simple Poems," was published in 2001.

He lives with his wife and two children in rural New York state.
