One week. That is all that stands between local girls basketball teams and the postseason.
This past weekend Big Sandy solidified its hold on the District 9C girls standings and Chester/J-I did the same in District 10C.
In Class B action on Friday night, the Harlem Wildcats picked up a much-needed win in Shelby. Harlem defeated the Coyotes 51-36.
Leandra Thomas continued her fine play by scoring a game-high 15 points. Danielle Dirden and Ida Mountain Chief added 10 points apiece.
On Friday night, the visiting Big Sandy Pioneers had no trouble dispatching the Chinook Sugarbeeters, 79-53, in District 9C action.
The Pioneers' high-octane offense outscored Chinook 41-24 in the first half en route to the easy victory.
Naomi Williams led the way for Big Sandy, scoring a game-high 22 points. Shalayna Pearson and Kaci Herron each added 18 points. The Beeters were led by Kassie Dugan with 15 points. Morgan Obie chipped in with 14.
The game of the week in the 9C took place in Gildford on Friday night as second-place Rocky Boy visited third-place North Star.
As expected, the game went down to the wire, with the Knights edging out Rocky Boy 55-50.
Rocky Boy jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, but the Knights used a 21-7 run in the second to pull ahead. Rocky Boy played well in the second half, but could never come all the way back.
Tasha Dyrland led North Star with 18 points and Jodi Norman added 14. The Morning Stars were paced by Shaneen Rainingbird's 17 points.
The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also picked up an important conference win on Friday night. The T-Birds held off visiting Turner, 54-45.
HLP trailed Turner heading into the fourth quarter, but a 20-10 run in the final stanza propelled the T-Birds to victory.
HLP got 15 points from Carla Obie and 11 from Suzie Kirkaldie. The Tornados were led by Ashley VanVoast's game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds.
In Sunburst, the Box Elder Bears' difficult season continued as they fell to the host Sunburst Refiners, 57-37.
Sophomore Rokki Parker paced the Bears with 10 points in the loss.
Meanwhile, in District 10C play, the undefeated and No. 2-ranked Chester/J-I Hawks kept on rolling on Friday night, defeating the Power Pirates 89-29 in Chester.
Chester/J-I benefited from the return of senior Keyla Briese, who had missed several weeks with an injury. Briese scored 18 points to go along with Mary DeVries' game-high 22.
On Saturday night in District 2B play, Harlem lost to its archrival, the Wolf Point Wolves, 71-52 in Wolf Point.
Brooke Filesteel led Harlem in the loss with 16 points, and Amy Stiffarm added 10 points.
In District 9C action, the Big Sandy Pioneers clinched the 9C regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's 9C tournament with a 65-57 win over Turner.
The Tornados put up a valiant fight in the first half, playing Big Sandy to a 30-30 tie. But an 18-11 run in the third quarter by Big Sandy proved to be too much for Turner to overcome.
The Pioneers (15-1) got a season-high 19 points form Shersteen Cline in the win. Shalayana Pearson chipped in with 13 points.
Turner (5-10) was led by Cheryl Cowan's game-high 23 points.
In Chester, the Chester/J-I Hawks used a 20-6 run in the fourth quarter Saturday night to knock off 9C rival North Star, 50-33, and stay undefeated.
The Hawks led by just one point at halftime, but their defense stifled North Star in the second half, holding the Knights to 11 points in the final 16 minutes.
Chester/J-I (17-0) got 14 points from Mary DeVries and 11 points from Hannah Pimley in the win. The Knights (10-6) were paced by Jodi Norman with 10 points.
In other 9C action on Saturday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters (7-9) rebounded from their loss to Big Sandy by defeating Hays-Lodge Pole (8-8), 61-50.
