Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

Some big wins and key losses set the tone for this weekend in boys Hi-Line basketball.

On Thursday the 9C Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds suffered a huge loss to Roy/Winifred, falling 71-40. The Thunderbirds held their own for the first quarter, but fell behind after being outscored 18-5 in the second. HLP was also held to just 22 second half points, while the Red Raiders scored 27 in the third quarter alone.

Scott Bradley led the Thunderbirds with 14 points while Ty Racine pitched in eight.

Friday brought several more games to the Hi-Line.

The league leading 1B Rocky Boy Stars barely outlasted the conference rival Shelby Coyotes. In a game with two overtimes, the Stars came away on top, 66-61. The contest was tight from the very beginning. The Stars held a 14-9 lead after one quarter, but held just a 25-23 lead at the half. The Stars' lead remained at two after both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter, but the Coyotes pushed for overtime in the fourth after outscoring the Stars 12-10.

In the first overtime both teams accounted for six more points each. And in the second frame of overtime, the Stars outscored the Coyotes 11-6 for the much needed conference win.

Leisin Oats posted 16 points to lead Rocky Boy and Nick Henry added 10. The Stars also got nine from Skylar LaForge and eight from Kirby LaFromboise.

The 2B Harlem Wildcats also played on Friday, but found themselves on the wrong end of dominating performance. The conference opponent Malta Mustangs defeated the Wildcats 101-63.

Devone LaSarte had 14 points followed by Brandon Hammond with 12, but it just wasn't enough to keep up with the Mustangs' 100 point barrage. Harlem trailed 29-21 after the first quarter, but a 35 point second quarter by the Mustangs put things out of reach.

Cole McCann also had 11 and Skyler Speak Thunder had eight for Harlem.

Another local squad to fall on Friday was the 10C Chester/J-I Hawks. Facing the 10C's No. 2 team, Power, the Hawks were defeated 65-55.

The Hawks were in the mix all night long, but couldn't quite overtake the Pirates.

C/J-I was outscored 19-15 in the first and 17-13 in the second. But the Hawks outscored the Pirates 15-12 in the third, but Power put the game away with 17 more in the fourth.

Lane Harmon had 17 points to lead the Hawks and Brandon Graff accounted for 10. Ryne Tyler also had nine, whiel Bryant Ceynar and Ceddy Pogue each had seven.

A handful of 9C rivalry teams faced off on Friday as well.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Big Sandy Pioneers went at it this weekend and it was the Beeters who came out on top. Chinook defeated the Pioneers 58-42. It was a big second half that propelled the Beeters past Big Sandy. At intermission the Pioneers held a 25-21 lead. But in the second half the Beeters outscored the Pioneers 37-17.

CJ Hanson and Colter Darlington led the Pioneers with 14 points apiece. But the Beeters proved to be too much as Tyler Erskine scored 21 and Lane Schmitt scored 16 for Chinook.

The 9C Box Elder Bears and Turner Tornadoes also met on Friday. And in this conference matchup, it was the Bears who came away with the 65-56 win.

But Turner got off to a solid start. They put up 19 points in the first quarter to take a 16-8 lead. But in a turn of events, the Bears outscored the Tornadoes 20-11 in the second quarter to take over a 28-27 lead at the half.

In the second half the Bears went on 37-29 run to lock down the win.

Travis Daniels had three treys and totaled 32 points for the Tornadoes. Levi Humphreys and Dusty Mohar also had nine points apiece.

But the Bears' Jacob parker outdid everybody with 38 points, and Jessie Ramos added 16.

On Saturday the Rocky Boy Stars returned to the court.

But this time around the Stars weren't as lucky, as they fell to Fairfield 63-55 in conference play. It was only the second conference loss of the season for the Stars, as they moved to 8-2 after the weekend's matchups.

Kirby LaFromboise led the Stars with 17 and Skylar LaForge added 14. But Oats, who averages in double digits was held to just six.

Rocky Boy fell behind 20-7 early and couldn't overcome the slow start. They added 17 in the second and 17 in the fourth, but Fairfield's 20 point fourth quarter was good enough to keep the Stars at bay.

Rocky Boy will take on Conrad on Thursday.

The 2B Harlem Wildcats suffered their second loss of the weekend on Saturday.

After a crushing loss to Malta, the Wildcats fell to the Glasgow Scotties 72-68 in another conference loss. Harlem fell to 1-6 in league play.

The Wildcats were competitive for the first half, and at the break they held a 32-28 lead. And though they kept putting points on the board in the second half, they couldn't contain the Scotties offense. Glasgow posted 19 points in the third and 26 in the fourth.

Speak Thunder totaled 22 points for the Wildcats and Travis First Raised added 15. Devone Lasarte also had 10 and McCann had eight.

Chinook grabbed its second win on Saturday.

This time around, the Beeters defeated the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds 62-42 in another conference win. The Beeters improved to 10-0 in league play and the Thunderbirds dropped to 3-4 in league play.

In the first quarter the Beeters jumped out to a 16-8 lead and never looked back. The Thunderbirds made a run in the second half with 12 in the third and 13 points in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as they suffered their second loss of the weekend.

Chinook was led by Erskine with 22 and Grant Tilleman with 15. And Schmitt added 12 in the win. The Thunderbirds were led by Floyd McConnell with nine and Trent Kirkaldie with eight. Scott Bradley also added seven.

Big Sandy earned a win on Saturday, but it came at the hands of Turner, their second loss of the weekend. The Pioneers defeated the Tornadoes 91-45.

The Pioneers scored nearly 20 points in each quarter, with a high of 27 in the second. And Darlington led the Pioneers with 18 points, but Bailey followed with 17 and Beck followed with 16. Stevens also had 14 for Big Sandy.

Daniels led Turner with 30 points, but didn't get much help. Alton Mathews finished with six and Humphreys had four.

The Box Elder Bears faced Heart Butte on Saturday, but fell 59-54 in a tight matchup.

The Bears took a 16-12 lead in the first quarter, but couldn't maintain the lead. In the second quarter the Warriors took the 42-26 lead after a 30 point quarter. And though the Bears outscored the Warriors 28-17 in the second half, they couldn't quite come away with the win.

Warren Parisian led the Bears with 14 points and Jacob Burns added 11. Ramos also had 11 and Parker added eight.
