Daniel Horton Column: Blue Pony offense has been very fun to watch

I know I have only covered the Havre High football team for three seasons now, but I have seen the in's and out's along side the ups and downs of three totally different squads now.

And while all of the residents of Havre have been "patiently" awaiting another big championship run since the Ponies won it all in 2004, I think I am right up there near the top of people that really wants to see this year's team succeed.

The Ponies have made the playoffs each of the three years I have been here. But after getting to the postseason on a regular basis, the Ponies have also struggled to put together a good post season run.

This year things look to be different, and even though HHS has had their fair share of struggles this season, I have my fingers crossed.

HHS has already put together a great season. And I know that it is because they have solid all around talent at every position on offense and defense. But what I have been most impressed with this year is the talent they have at the offensive skill positions.

And if the Ponies want to keep their momentum this weekend when they take on the Hamilton Broncs in the second round of the Class A playoffs at home, I think their offense has to stay sharp.

For the Ponies to find success the defense will get the job done, they have to. But at the state playoff level, every team can produce points in a hurry, and the Ponies can't get left behind.

So far this season the Pony offense has been explosive to say the least.

Quarterback Justin Jensen, running backs Casey Schaub and Ryan Brandt and wide receivers Brayden Grimson, Zach Plum and Thurman Holdsclaw have come together for one of the best combinations in the Central A as well as the entire Class A. Their talents make the team explosive on the ground and in the air as well as gives them the ability to score quickly and often.

This also keeps the opposing defense constantly second guessing their schemes, because whether the Ponies have a five receiver set (including Brandt lined up in the slot), or have a two back set, the Ponies can run or throw out of any lineup.

But the talent the Ponies house on offense is also being utilized. They are fast and in great shape, and keep the pressure on opposing defenses. And if they can continue to run their no huddle, hurry-up offense, with or without the sideline cue cards with the same success they have already seen this season, I am sure offensive coordinator Danny Wirtzberger is up for the challenge to get the Blue Ponies through their second round matchup this weekend.

And one thing is for sure, this great Pony offense will certainly be giving the Broncs fits on Saturday afternoon.
