North Star girls, C/J-I boys shine in Rudyard

A lot of track and field teams across the state had a busy weekend of competition, but things kept rolling right a long on Monday, when a good chunk of Hi-Line talent competed yet again.

Monday afternoon the North Star Knights hosted the Jason Groseclose Memorial track meet in Rudyard.

In boys action, it was the Chester/J-I Hawks naking the No. 1 spot with 72 points, while the Havre junior varsity took second with 71. The Big Sandy Pioneers were third with 70, and the Turner Tornadoes and North Star Knights tied for fourth with 66. The Box Elder Bears also grabbed 40 while Hays-Lodge Pole finished with 19.

On the girls' side of things, North Star was the No. 1 team with 119 points, while Big Sandy was third with 82. Chester/J-I was fourth with 77, Turner was fifth with 35, Rocky Boy was sixth with 23 and the Havre junior varsity was seventh with 14.

Several athletes placing in the top six led the Hawks. Leonard Puglsey placed in the 100 meter and 400 meter, and Jordan Oraw placed in the 100 meter, 200 meter, javelin and shot put. Clayton Lohr, Reid Broadhurst and Seth Renville also placed in two events each, with Lohr placing in the 200 and 400, Broadhurst placing in the to discus and shot put, and Renville placing in the high jump and pole vault. Renville had the Hawks' only No. 1 place, clearing 5-0 in the high jump. Brandon Theel also placed in the 100 and Michael Fauerbach placed in the 400.

Big Sandy finished near the top with a handful of top finishes. Kyle Strutz was first in the 200 (27.7), Trevor Lackner was first in the 400 (58.9) and Kaden Beck was first in the shot put (39-10). Jesse Bailey was also second in the 100 and fourth in the javelin, while Zac Leader was second in the 800.

The Knights weren't far behind with 66 points, led by Samuel Ulmen, who placed in four events. Samuel Ulmen placed in the 200, 400, long jump and pole vault. Quinn Spinler also had a good afternoon, placing first in the 800 (2:24.1) and fifth in the pole vault, while Cooper Spicher was first in the 100 (12.9) and fifth in the javelin. Donovan Ulmen placed in the discus, javelin and shot put, and Jaxon Simonson placed in the discus.

And Turner earned their points from Lucas Reed in the 200, long jump and triple jump. Reed was No. 1 in the triple jump (35-9). Aaron VanValkenburg also placed in the 1600 and 3200, while Dylan Welsch placed in the long jump, javelin and the triple jump and Levi Humphreys placed in the javelin. Dusty Mohar took the No. 1 spot in the 110 hurdles (21.7) and the No. 1 spot in the 300 hurdles (50.9).

The Bears' William Ketchup took first in the 1600 (5:30.4), while Quinn Baker was third in the 1600 and Geno Menard was third in the 300 hurdles. Ketchum also took first place in the 3200 (11:49.0).

And the Thunderbirds had three athletes place in four events. Garrett Doney was the No. 1 discus thrower (112-7) and also placed sixth in the shot put. Cody Kirkaldie and Sterling Whitecow both placed in the 3200.

The North Star girls dominated the completion with their 119 points on the afternoon.

Mackenzie Hansen placed in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump, while Sarah Human also racked up the points for North Star. Human placed in the 300 hurdles, long jump and javelin, but was first in the high jump (4-0). Sierra Yanny also placed in the 200, and was first in the pole vault (7-0). Sarah Massar also placed in the long jump, triple jump and discus, while Kassidy Hansen placed first in the discus (82-5), third in the javelin and fourth in the shot put. Kristyn Lavery also placed in the 1600, while Kim Luttrell placed in the discus and shot put.

Big Sandy didn't have as many placers, but had four No. 1 finishes to boos their team score.

Quintin Pegar was first in the 400 (71.0) and Shelby Gasvoda was first in the 3200 (14:36.3). Mateila Cline also finished first in the 800 (2:53) and first in the 1600 (6:41.0). Also placing was Pegar in the 100 (fourth), Cheyenne Johnson in the 3200 (second) and Brandy Bahnmiller in the 300 hurdles (third).

Chester/J-I also had quite a few No. 1 finishers, accompanied by a number of other top finishers.

Britnee Theel was first int eh 100 hurdles (18.7) and 300 hurdles (54.5). And Jenni Ghekiere was first in the long jump (13-3), while Tianna Houlihan was first in the shot put (26-10). Houlihan was also second in the 100 and sixth in the discus, while Theel was third in the 100 and second in the triple jump. And Ghekiere was also second in the javelin and third in the triple jump to help lead the way.

Turner's lack of numbers didn't stop them from producing either, as they grabbed points from all over the board. Shania Maloney placed fourth in the 100 hurdles, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump. And Kristina Conlan placed third in the 3200 and sixth in the javelin, while Lindsey Hutton also placed in the 400, discus and shot put. Sharon Yu also placed in the 400.

The Rocky Boys Stars didn't get any production in the boys' field, but on the girls' side, they managed 23. Tennae Singer led the way with a first place finish in the javelin (88-5) and a second place finish in the shot put (25-7). But Shania Parker also placed in the 100 and Tyann Watson placed in the 200.

Not all of the varsity athletes from every squad competed on Monday, but the Groseclose was still a solid meet for those who did. And with the season's end growing closer and closer, every meet and opportunity to compete is vital.
