What we saw this weekend

There aren't many weekends like the one which just happened on the Hi-Line. But when there are, it's a lot of fun.

ter, east to Chinook, south to Big Sandy and of course right here in Havre, there was just too many sports going on this weekend, and there was no way to get to it all. But make no mistake, we definitely tried.

Here's a few things we saw this weekend that may not have gotten into Monday's sports pages.

Snow. It was snowing for much of the Chinook/Victor Class C football game on Saturday, but it didn't deter Chinook fans, nor the Beeters from cranking out another home playoff win. It looked like a big crowd was on hand in Chinook on Saturday, and honestly, it's hard to find a Class C football team that gets better support than the Beeters do.

Interestingly, it was snowing like crazy on Friday night in Havre, but the it didn't appear to be coming down nearly as bad in Big Sandy, where the Pioneers also won a huge home playoff game and advanced to this week's Six-Man quarterfinals. Had it been snowing hard, the Pioneers wouldn't have been phased however. Big Sandy has been on a great, three-year playoff run and they're used to playing in adverse conditions.

I can't stop gushing about what I saw from the MSU-Northern volleyball team this weekend. Wow were the Skylights impressive in wins over UM-Western and Westminster College. And to top it all off, many of the Skylights' parents were in attendance this weekend, and what they witnessed was their kids playing some of the best volleyball Northern has seen in a long, long time. It truly was a cool atmosphere on Saturday as the Skylights finished their home schedule with another victory.

I know the MSU-N wrestling team was not happy with its performance against North Idaho this weekend, but I also know that the Lights will bounce back from it. They have too much talent and toughness, and they have a tenacious head coach who will get them to where they want to go.

But one thing that was a success for the program this past week was holding an actual dual in the wrestling room at the Armory Gymnasium. For those of you who don't know, the wrestling room is the old NMC Pool, and it still has the bleachers from when the pool was still there. I didn't get to see Friday's dual against NMC myself, but I did see last Wednesday's Maroon/Gold Dual in the room and I thought the Lights did a great job of making the room home, and it was actually very fan friendly. I'm looking forward to seeing the Lights back inside the actual gym this winter, but Northern it was pretty cool to see MSU-N turn its practice facility into its home for a week.

Lastly, one thing we didn't see, and were unable to get to because of the massive amount of sporting events this weekend is worth noting. The Havre Ice Dome held its first actual Bonspeil Tournament over the weekend, and for those of you who aren't familiar, that's curling. It's a great sport and one that fascinates me, and if Havre puts on another one, I hope I don't miss it. As with everything that goes on at the Ice Dome, and judging by the photos our photographer got, I know the tournament was a great success.
