Reservations closed due to intense cold

Fort Belknap and Rocky Boy's Indian reservations services were closed Monday due to the severe cold.

Rocky Boy's Information Specialist Rusty Gopher said this morning that services at Rocky Boy were closed Monday including the tribal office, clinic, college and schools.

"Everything but law enforcement," he said.

He added that the roads at Rocky Boy were cleared by the end of the day Monday and people should be able to drive safely today.

They didn't receive a lot of snow, Gopher said, although more fell higher in the mountains.

The shut down was due to the severe cold temperatures, with temperatures approximately minus 9 degrees Fahrenheit and with wind chill dropping below negative 20.

He said conditions are much better today, adding that the reservation schools make it a point not to send students out for recess when temperatures are below zero.

Fort Belknap Roads Director Pete Bishop said Monday that Fort Belknap also closed their tribal office due to the severe cold. He said the road conditions were good and clear. The reservation and the Little Rockies only got about 3 inches to 4 inches of snow, Bishop added.

Fort Belknap Planning Director Delina Cuts The Rope said this morning that the bus system and schools in Hays-Lodge Pole and Harlem were closed Monday due to the severe temperatures. She added that the tribal office, head start program and the transit system were also closed because of the weather.

Ice and snow buildup are what is concerning, Cuts The Rope said, because it makes driving conditions bad and puts people at risk. She said the tribal government wanted to be cautious for the safety of the people.

"Safety first," Cuts The Rope said.

She said that everything is operating today and schools are back in session.
