UMW welcomes students for orientation and convocation

From University of Montana Western

The University of Montana Western’s Office of Residence Life announced the university has scheduled its New Student Orientation for Thursday, Aug. 22 through Sunday, Aug. 25.

The activities begin at 8 a.m. on Opening Day with the Montana Western Moving Company event. The community is invited to help new students and their families move into the residence halls on the Montana Western campus.

Residence Life Director Michael Piazzola said this year’s program will include Convocation — the official start of the school year ceremony — an inspirational keynote address by speaker Justin Jones-Fosu, and a hike to the hillside “M.”

“Orientation is mandatory for all first-year and transfer students and it’s also fun and informative. It’s a great way for the community to show new students just how welcoming Dillon and the Montana Western family truly is,” Piazzola said.

Justin Jones-Fosu, Convocation keynote speaker, is a dynamic speaker who motivates and inspires students, by getting them excited, energized and ready for the challenges ahead. Students will be impacted by his energy, enthusiasm and encouragement. Parents, friends and family are cordially invited to attend Convocation with their student on Friday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m. in the Keltz Arena.

Additional events include sessions for Native American, veteran and TRIO students, a football scrimmage with tailgate dinner and a dance.
