Name of Helena man killed in crash released

Blaine County Sheriff and Coroner John Colby has released the name of the man who died as the result of an early Wednesday morning crash on U.S. Highway 2.

The man who died was Lane Sweet of Helena, 22.

Montana Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred early Wednesday morning in a construction zone near Chinook.

The Highway Patrol report said speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash. The victim was not wearing a seat belt.

The report said the crash occurred at mile marker 396.9 about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver was traveling west on Highway 2, exceeding the posted speed of 35 mph, and entered a transition into a graveled surface and the Chevrolet C-15 pickup truck he was driving went into a driver-side skid.

The vehicle tripped when it hit soft gravel on the shoulder and rolled one-half times, coming to rest on its top, the report said.

The driver was partially ejected and was pinned under the vehicle, the report said. He was transported to a local hospital and died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
