Holiday moves on through the pandemic

Events are being altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the season is still moving on.

This weekend The Havre Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual cookies with Santa, but this year it was held as a walk-by event at the Holiday Village Mall.

Then the Clauses went down to Town Square for the annual tree-lighting ceremony, but without its usual fanfare.

The event normally has vendors with food and drinks, members of the Havre High School choir leading Christmas carols and Santa talking to children but the pandemic shortened the event this year, which was streamed on Facebook Live.

Along with the tree lighting, the Chamber announced the winners of the Super Certificates at the event.

The annual Live Nativity also was held Sunday at Van Orsdel United Methodist Church, also with some modifications. The people portraying the figures at the scene were carefully scheduled and their costumes and masks only used once, with different costumes for each different actor, and the viewers drove by the scene.

By the end of the event, 114 cars had driven through and the volunteers handed out about 500 individually wrapped home-baked cookies to the viewers.
