Havre wrestlers go 4-0 in home duals against the Western A

It was East versus West all across Class A wrestling this past weekend, and that included in Havre.
The seventh-ranked Havre Blue Ponies played host to a ton of dual action at the Havre Middle School Gym Friday and Saturday, with four duals against Class A stalwarts.
Havre started the weekend off with a dominant win over the Corvallis Blue Devils Friday afternoon. Despite falling behind a quick 6-0, the Ponies cruised to a 51-18 win — a win that included six victories by pin. The winners by fall included Mick Chagnon at 120 pounds, Dominic Perkins at 126, a come-from-behind pin by Riley Pleninger at 138, a quick pin from Kendall Pleninger at 145, a dominant fall from Orion Thivierge at 180 and an exciting pin from Randy Tommerup at 205. Carson Harris rounded out the scoring for the Ponies with a 6-0 win at 113 pounds.
Following the win over the Blue Devils, the Ponies moved on to Ronan, and while the Chiefs are a Top 10 team, Havre took them down with ease, 47-18.
Perkins got Havre off and running with a pin at 126 pounds, while Riley and Kendall Pleninger both won decisions. Then, Wyatt Hansen (152) and Kale VanCampen (160) got into the act with first-period pins, while Thivierge rolled to a technical fall at 170 and Tommerup got a pin at 182.
“I was really pleased with how we wrestled,” Havre head coach Beau LaSalle said. “We were getting a lot of bonus points, and winning a lot of matches on the mat. I think on Friday we only lost six matches, so that was good to see.”
The first day was a great one for Havre, but the Ponies had more challengers Saturday.
It started with Libby, where the Ponies beat the Loggers 42-36. Pins were again the story for Havre, as Chagnon, Perkins and Riley and Kendall Pleninger all won by fall to give the Ponies a big lead. Thivierge and Tommerup also got pins for the Ponies.
With Havre on a roll, the Ponies took to the mat for the final dual of the weekend, a showdown with No. 2 Frenchtown. And, in strong fashion, the Ponies edged the Broncs 33-30.
Chagnon won a big match for the Ponies at 120 with a pin, as did Perkins at 126. The Pleninger brothers also made it a perfect 8-0 weekend with victories, as did Tommerup at 182 and Thivierge at 170. Tommerup’s 4-0 decision proved to be the difference in the dual as well.
“Randy wrestled really well,” LaSalle said. “He’s just gaining so much confidence. You can see it in the way he’s wrestling, and the way he’s winning.”
And with a 4-0 home record this weekend, LaSalle sees that same traits in his team as a whole.
“We’re getting better and better as time goes on,” LaSalle said. “The guys we expect to go out and get pins are doing it, and then our young guys are starting to grow, they’re starting to really step it up.”
Havre hits the road this weekend for back-to-back days of wrestling at East Helena.
