Havre’s Public Works Director Dave Peterson said this morning that multiple water main breaks in the city overnight resulted in flooding and some road damage.
Peterson said the breaks occurred on Fourth Avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets, another occurred on Fourth Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues, and a main transmission line broke on Third Street between Montana Avenue and First Avenue.
Peterson said he was unsure of the exact cause of the breaks and Public Works was still looking into the situation. He said there has been a lot of water usage all around.
Peterson said repairs are underway.
“We’re in the middle of it right now. They broke last night, between two and four o’clock,” Peterson said.
Peterson said he does not expect the repairs to take long but it depends on the extent of the work that needs to be done.
He said Public Works is working on two of the breaks and a contractor is working on the big transmission line.
“We’re hoping by the end of the day, hopefully, on that one,” Peterson said.
He said the two Public Works is dealing with will depend on the situation. If pipes have to be replaced it could take a bit longer but he hopes they should have them up and running by the end of the day.
Peterson added that, since one of the breaks involved a main transmission line, the department is asking people to not use any outside water until repairs are made. The water plant is running at partial capacity because of the transmission line break, he said.
“So, you know, we can’t keep our storage tanks full if we’ve got a lot of people watering outside. So we’re asking everybody to refrain from watering until further notice,” Peterson said.
