Blue Ponies get on track with road win

Havre volleyball defends home court against Miles City

With a 2-2 record, the Havre High football team needed a win on Friday night when it faced Lockwood on the road. While it was not easy, the Blue Ponies survived to defeat the Lockwood Lions, 11-9.

The Lions struck first on Friday with a field goal for a 3-0 lead. But the Ponies responded in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run from Tate Nelson. Courtnage then kept the ball himself on the two-point try to give Havre an 8-3 lead.

The Ponies stayed ahead with a Ty Golie field goal to take an 11-3 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, both offenses struggled to break through. But late in the fourth quarter, Lockwood's Tyce Casterline ran the ball in with a quarterback sneak to cut the deficit to 11-9. However, the Lions failed to convert the two-point try that would have tied the game.

With just under two minutes left on the clock, the Lions had to attempt an onside kick. But the Ponies recovered the kick and ran out the clock to seal the win. The HHS football team is now 3-2 just past the halfway point of the season and will next play East Helena at Blue Pony Stadium this Friday at 7 p.m.

The HHS volleyball team also picked up a win on Friday night with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Miles City Cowgirls at Havre High Gymnasium. The Ponies got off to a strong start as they won the first set, 25-14, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Ponies continued to play well in the second set, which they won, 25-16, for a 2-0 lead in the match. Miles City played much better in the third set, but Havre ultimately won, 25-19, to win the match in three sets.

With the win, the HHS volleyball team improved to 6-1 in the regular season and stayed unbeaten with a 4-0 record in Northeast A competition. The Ponies will next play Browning on the road this Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
