The Havre Kiwanis Club celebrates 100 years of service

Nov. 23, 2023, the Havre Kiwanis Club will have served 100 years in the community of Havre.

Kiwanis is an international organization serving all communities of the world.

The club's main goal is to provide community service and the motto is "Serving The Children Of The World."

Over the years, the establishment and development of Camp Kiwanis in the park that became Beaver Creek Park in the Bear Paw Mountains stands out as one of the best projects. The campground itself has changed but has continued to grow and develop. The original site consisted of a camp area, a mess hall, a swimming pool and a chapel.

Hill County now manages the facility, while the Kiwanis Club continues to support the camp.

A recent project was the replacement of the windows in the cabins and the camp. Other future projects entail developing the playground area for Early Headstart in Havre, planting trees around Fresno Dam area, and constructing storage units for the Havre school district fourth graders. The units will be used to store teaching supplies for the Agriculture in Montana Schools program.

For several years, the Havre Club has participated in the Adopt-A-Highway cleanup. Club members also support the Salvation Army as bell ringers for the kettle drive and include themselves in the set up and tear down for the Red Cross Blood drawings.

The club has also provided funds to Havre elementary schools for supplies for this school year.

The club members say it has always been a proud supporter of the Havre High School Key Club, which has the motto "Caring - Our Way Of Life."

Some of the other projects that have been worked on consist of working to improve traffic safety in town, notably pushing for the installation of a stop light at Fifth Avenue and Sixth Street, funding students for Boys and Girls states.

Financial assistance for foreign exchange students through American Field Services is another major project the club put its focus on.

Helping with the parking area at the Great Northern Fairgrounds and providing financial assistance toward a new swing set at Pepin Park is another contribution from the club.

In addition to these events and assignments, the club has assisted the Montana State University-Northern Scholarship Foundation's "Pheasants for Lights" events over the years and has purchased timers for the swim team.

Most of the cost for the fence for the community garden was paid for by the club.

The Kiwanis Club members said they send out a special thanks to the people of the community for all the support they have given to the fund-raising activities such as Pancake Days, apple sales and the club's fair booth.

The club members said they looks forward to serving the community for the next 100 years.
