MSU-N wrestling takes second at Spokane Open

This past Sunday in Spokane, Washington, the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team performed well at the Spokane Open. With 154 total points, the Lights finished second in the tournament just behind the University of Providence.

Justin Windauer wrestled well for the Lights as he finished first in the 157-pound weight class. He started the tournament with a pin against Cesar Veliz. Windauer then won by a technical fall and a major decision in his next two matches. After another major decision, Windauer won the championship with a pin.

NaKoda Siegel also took first for the Lights as he wrestled at 174 pounds. He won his first three matches of the weekend by technical fall. He then won by major decision to advance to the championship match. In the title match, Siegel won, 10-3, to take first.

At 197 pounds, Carl Hansen finished second for the Lights. He won his first match by a 9-6 decision and then won by pin. He then won his semifinal match with a 2-1 decision. Austin Vanek finished third at 184 pounds this past weekend. He won his first two matches by pin. After a loss, Vanek won by a 14-2 major decision to take third.

Devin Crawford took third at 165 pounds. He started the weekend winning by a technical fall and then won his next match with a 4-2 decision. In a consolation match, Crawford advanced with a medical forfeit. In the third-place match, Crawford won to finish the tournament strong.

At 125 pounds, Leo Anderson took fourth for the Lights. He won his first three matches of the tournament all by fall. He then won a consolation match to ensure a fourth-place finish. Brennan McDermott took fourth at 133 pounds. He started the weekend with wins by fall and a 4-1 decision. In a consolation match, McDermott won by a forfeit.

Ryan Graves finished fourth at 157 pounds. He started the weekend with a win by a technical fall. In the consolation matches, he won by a fall and then he won by a 7-0 decision. He then won again with another technical fall.

Cade Gubler took fourth at 184 pounds for the Lights. He won with a 12-3 decision and then a fall to start the tournament and later won by pin in a consolation match. Shane Mattson finished fourth at 285 pounds. He won his first two matches by pin. In the consolation bracket, Mattson won with a fall, a 1-0 decision and then a 4-1 sudden victory.

The MSU-N wrestling team will next compete in the Argo Duals in Great Falls Dec. 1.
