I have just completed a holiday trip to visit my daughter and her family in

I have just completed a holiday trip to visit my daughter and her family in Atlanta, Ga. On my previous trips there, I usually took the Northwest (now Delta) flight from Great Falls and changed aircraft in Minneapolis. Despite a one-month advance in looking for tickets, there were no seats available for my choice of departure dates on this flight. So, I decided to investigate flying out of Havre on Great Lakes Airlines. I am writing to tell the Hi-Line community that I had a wonderful experience flying Great Lakes from Havre... Full story

  • 3 top Democrats to retire this year

LIZ SIDOTI AP National Political Writer WASHINGTON

With the 2010 election year barely under way, two senators and one governor — all Democrats — ditched plans to run for re-election in the latest signs of trouble for President Barack Obama's party. Taken together, the decisions by Sens. Chr i s Dodd of Connecticut and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota as well as Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter caused another bout of heartburn for Democrats as they struggle to defend themselves in a sour political environment for incumbents, particularly the party in charge. As 2009 ended, Democrats watc...

  • Governor asks agencies to plan for cuts

MATT GOURAS Associated Press Writer HELENA

State budget cuts could be getting far more severe following an order Tuesday from the governor that agencies prepare contingency plans for 5 percent spending reductions, a move that surprised legislative leaders who were not told of the plans. Gov. Brian Schweitzer made the announcement following a string of reports showing the state budget picture is getting worse, not better. A report due out today is expected to make an even gloomier forecast. Schweitzer said state law gives him the authority to cut spending if projected...

In her role as child support director for the Chippewa Cree Tribe, Brenda Gardipee sees more than 250 cases a year of child support and custodial disputes on Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation. The cases go through tribal courts in adversary proceedings. She was looking for a new way to handle such cases, suspecting that many times mediation would work to the betterment of both parents and especially for the children. Instead of a new way to accomplish this goal, she is resurrecting an old way. For almost two years, she has been...

Rehberg's fire lawsuit misunderstood Editor: I just finished rereading the Billings Fire Department (BFD) and Department of Natural Resources and Conservation fire reports on the Rehberg ranch fire of July 2008 and talked to people on this fire and to neighbors. I am an independent voter and was a wildland firefighter for 37 years (majority a smokejumper) and an initial attack or extended attack incident commander on nearly 200 of 600 fires. • Few surprises at the halfway point

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

After five weeks of Frontier Conference football, the Carroll College Fighting Saints are undefeated. That's not a shocker. As the league reaches its bye week and the halfway point in the season, things have gone almost according to plan. At least in some ways. The No. 2 Saints (5-0) are right where they should be and their best football might still be in front of them. Carroll was pushed in early games by Rocky Mountain College, and even UM-Western held the Saints' offense down. But against Frontier stalwarts like Montana... Full story

  • Warburton does what's right for north-central Montana

Letter to the Editor — State Sen. Taylor Brown, Huntley

When Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey came to Malta recently, he heard many of us express concern about the possibility of another national monument here. I spoke personally with the director, and I was glad to see Rep. Wendy Warburton also there, standing up against big government for private property rights. Wendy told him the federal government has more than enough control over more than enough land in Montana already. In the last legislative session, I watched Wendy serve with dedication on the House Agricultu...

  • Obama assails GOP, promotes new jobs program

    DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press Writer

Obama assails GOP, promotes new jobs program MILWAUKEE (AP) — A combative President Barack Obama rolled out a long-term jobs program Monday that would exceed $50 billion to rebuild roads, railways and runways, and coupled it with a blunt campaign-season assault on Republicans for causing Americans' hard economic times. GOP leaders instantly assailed Obama's proposal as an ineffective one that would simply raise already excessive federal spending. Many congressional Democrats are also likely to be reluctant to boost e... Full story

  • Business as usual: Mariani competes

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The last few years, former Havre High and University of Montana star Marc Mariani would know exactly what to expect when fall training camp with the Montana Grizzlies began. But after a full week of NFL training camp with the Tennessee Titans, Mariani seems to be making himself right at home — despite it being a brand new experience. However, one thing Mariani has had to get used to is heat. The first week of Titan's camp at Baptist Sports Park in Nashville has brought blazing hot temperatures with high humidity, and it's t...

  • GOP hopeful of big gains this fall

LIZ SIDOTI AP National Political Writer KANSAS CITY, Mo.

With Demo c r a t s o n d e f e n s e, Republicans expressed cautious confidence of big gains in the fall elections — particularly in governor's races — though they acknowledged that the GOP must do more to snatch control of Congress from President Barack Obama's party. Three months before the midterm elections, it was all business and little celebration as the 168-member Republican National Committee met this week to finalize Tampa, Fla., as the 2012 GOP convention city and set the presidential primary calendar.
