  • A letter from Marc

    Updated Jun 8, 2018

To the city of Havre and all of north-central Montana, It has come time to officially announce my retirement from the NFL. It was an incredible journey that started in the streets, parks and fields of our community. My foundation was laid early at Elks and Pepin Parks, and later moved to the gym and playgrounds at St. Jude's Havre Central. The basketball and tennis courts of Havre High were next, and eventually onto the grass and between the lines at Blue Pony Stadium. These...

  • Losing one of Montana's greatest champions

    Updated Jun 8, 2018

So great is the loss of Steve Browning to our state and its communities, the flags should be lowered to half-staff and a moment of silence observed across Montana. Steve died May 15, 2018, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. The legacy he created for Montana, however, will never die. While Steve will be remembered for many things — a brilliant law career, his work in Washington, D.C., and, of course, his love of golf — I will remember him most fondly for his passion and work in philanthropy. A common focus of Ste...

  • On its 112th birthday, Antiquities Act faces threats

Happy birthday to the Antiquities Act, which turns 112 today. What an illustrious history it has, and what amazing gifts it has given to the American people. What does the Antiquities Act do, and why is it important to you? First, the act made it illegal to destroy or remove historic or prehistoric articles from public lands. Section II of the act says: “That the President of the United States is hereby authorized, in his discretion, to declare by public proclamation historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, a...

  • View from the North 40: You say @#$^&, I say ha, ha, hah

    Pam Burke, HDN|Updated Jun 8, 2018

At one point in the evolution of the North 40’s motherland, we took down some barbed wire fence and put up a one-wire electric fence to temporarily split our two main pastures. I swear we did this for practical purposes. The pain and torture were just a perk. The first thing my horses did was test what they thought was a very flimsy fence. It was a logical response, even by human standards, because the fence had been three strands of heavy, twisted wire with barbs. It was n...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Jun 8, 2018

You know, Lord, it’s delightful when a group of us gals meet; we generally ask each other how we’re dealing with life and how our families are doing etc. Occasionally we hear about how animals have feelings too, how horses and cows might act, or even puppy dogs missing their “Mama” while she’s gone for a couple of days. Puppy didn’t eat ’cause “Mama” wasn’t home, but boy-howdy, did Puppy chow down once Mama came back!! We commented how foxes most likely are fond of “dining” on kitty cats. One gal’s kitty cats vanished, she...

  • The Scriptures on Finances: June 8, 2018

    Updated Jun 8, 2018

This week we will again look at material from the book “Managing God’s Money” by Randy Alcorn. Luke 16:9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. It is quite interesting what you find when you read the Bible. We know that we should use our time and resources wisely. Jesus instructs us to use worldly wealth to gain friends for ourselves. The truth is that worldly wealth will be gone. We will leave it behind when we die. It can disap...

  • Out Our Way: Thy kingdom come

    Updated Jun 8, 2018

Out our way, you learn to love the land or hate it. The big open is a vastness of grandeur and beauty — or an empty wasteland. Back in seminary, a buddy of mine landed a wonderful position in a large Manhattan church and was telling me bout the magnificent view he had from his apartment. Looking out from the 40th floor or so, he had a great view of other apartments and office buildings. Steel and glass all around, and solid lines of cars, taxis, busses and millions of folks walking along the sidewalks below … and at nig...
