  • View from the North 40: Connect-the-dots picture

    Pam Burke|Updated Oct 17, 2014

Remember the old connect-the-dots pictures from grade school? Sometimes life-things — like connect-the-dots — don't look like much until you make the connections that form something more meaningful. 1 • For me, the worst part about writing articles for the newspaper is calling people. I’m not good with any of that initial approach stuff. And the worst of the worst is getting an answering machine. I generally hang up on answering machines and take a little time to ponder...

  • Community Focus: For the love of football ...

    Wendy K. Sullivan|Updated Oct 17, 2014

As the football season for our Havre Middle School Mustangs came to an end Saturday, something occurred to me: the rules of the game were compromised. I was warned by our Mustang parents that Lewistown celebrates “I Hate Havre Day,” and I was shocked. They had not exaggerated. This is a personal affront to our community and is for every parent who cheered on our Mustangs and Blue Ponies last weekend. Our running back ran for 60 yards to complete a touchdown only to be met with a pale yellow flag. It didn’t stop there. Play...

Rudyard sits 40 miles west of Havre on U.S. Highway 2 and has a population of 275, according to the 2010 census. An old sign for the town reads "596 Nice People and 1 Old Sore Head!" but the population of the town has dwindled since it was erected. However, they still name an official Old Sore Head at bigger events. The town has a few businesses, including a theater, restaurant, beauty...

  • Griz, Cats return home

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 17, 2014

For the Montana State Bobcats, Saturday will hopefully be another day to keep the train rolling. For the Montana Grizzlies, it's time to start fresh. And both will look to do it in the friendly confines of their home stadiums. The No. 9 Bobcats (3-0, 5-2) will look to keep their high-octane offensive assault going when they host Weber State Saturday at Bobcat Stadium. Meanwhile, the No. 7 Grizzlies (2-0, 4-2) will emerge from a much-needed bye week to host struggling UC Davis...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 17, 2014

The Havre High volleyball team was looking to exact some revenge on the Choteau Bulldogs for a defeat earlier in the season, but in the end, the Bulldogs proved once again that they are simply on a different level than the Blue Ponies. In a dominating performance from start to finish, Choteau easily dispatched of the visiting Ponies Thursday night, defeating Havre by the scores of 25-8, 25-15 and 25-21 to earn the sweep on senior night. The win was reminiscent of first meeting between the two teams, which took place at the...

  • Friday Night Lights: This Game is Special

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 17, 2014

There is something special about playing high school football. For some it's about college scholarships and winning state championships. For others, the value is much more intrinsic. It's about living a dream, playing under the lights a Friday night, representing yourself, your school and your community. For Havre High senior Rocky Kuhr, there is no college scholarship at the end of his football rainbow. There may not be any awards or honors that follow his career, but that...

  • God wants not our obedience but our hearts

    Updated Oct 17, 2014

Brian and Vicki Barrows In our August article we explored some aspects of learning to think the way King Jesus does. One important point dealt with His humility. The main passage we looked at was Chapter 2 of Philippians, which includes this exhortation: “Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus, … who humbled himself … .” We’ll briefly revisit the topic of humillity toward the end of this article. Another aspect had to do with the way Jesus sometimes challenged the prevailing wisdom. Let’s also briefly review that...

  • Out Our Way: A $5 Coke

    John Bruington|Updated Oct 17, 2014

Remember the mess we had when someone at the government “Einstein” came up with the idea of making dollar coins the same size as a quarter? Well it wasn’t just foreigners who sometimes mistook one for the other. Ever pay $5 for a $1.25 pop? Well the same is true of God’s gifts. Each talent or skill or blessing is important in its own right, but not all have the same value or importance in our lives or the Kingdom’s work. We need to know where to put the emphasis and focus in life in order to make the best use of what has...

  • Skylights soar past Eagles in home opener

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 17, 2014

For the Montana State University-Northern Skylights, the Armory Gymnasium was kind Thursday night. For the visiting Northwest Indian College Eagles, not so much. In their home opener in front of a good crowd at the Armory, the Skylights imp0roved to 3-0 on the season by trouncing the Eagles 87-30. Northern shot a blistering 60 percent from the field in the second half, breaking the game wide open in the process. But as good of a finish as the Skylights had, veteran head coach...

  • Blue Ponies ready to tackle Pirates

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 17, 2014

It’s hard to say that a nonconference game is a must win for the Havre High football team. But, after back-to-back losses, the Central A Blue Ponies need a win, regardless of the opponent. Tonight, the Ponies, who are 2-5 overall and 1-2 in Central A conference play, will take a break for their conference slate to play host to Polson. Havre’s contest with the Northwestern A rival will kick off inside Blue Pony Stadium at 7 p.m. Despite the sub-500 record, HHS can still mak...

  • Lights try it again with a Tech rematch

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 17, 2014

When the Montana State University-Northern football team went to Butte to open the 2014 season, emotions were running high. After all, the Lights had just been through a tumultuous fall camp, a controversy that has been well documented. And on that night in Butte, emotion didn’t quite carry the Lights through as they lost their season-opener at Montana Tech 38-24. Now, well over a month, as well as half the season, has passed, yet emotions will again be running high as the L...

  • Lights thump Eagles at home

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 16, 2014

For thirteen minutes, Northwest Indian College hung in with the heavily favored Montana-State University-Northern men's basketball team. But after that, any doubt about who would emerge victorious was wiped away by the Lights' stifling defense. Northern, playing in its second game of the 2014-15 season, used a 23-4 run in the latter stages of the first half to roll to an easy 91-64 victory. With the win, the Lights improve to 2-0 on the young season. In the early going, the...
