  • Havre Salvation Army desperate for volunteers

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Dec 16, 2022

Havre Salvation Army has only nine days left to raise money for next year’s social services budget and is in serious need of volunteers and contributions. Havre Salvation Army Director Trina Crawford said this year’s Red Kettle Campaign, which makes up the next year’s budget for services, is 42 percent of the way to its $38,000 goal, one that, if met, would allow the organization to provide a little more assistance to people than they normally would. “We wouldn’t have to say no so often,” Crawford said. She said her organizat...

During their weekly business meeting Thursday the Hill County Commission voted to approve a letter of support for the state raising their Medicaid reimbursement rates for nursing homes. The letter was signed by all three members of the commission and said the funding to raise these rates is much needed to ensure quality care for local elderly residents and will provide stability to skilled nursing facilities. “We, as a commission, are very much in support of this rate increase,” Hill County Commission Chair Diane McLean sai...

  • View from the North 40: The fabric works in mysterious ways

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 16, 2022

I don’t mean to sound overly dramatic, but I think I may have proven the existence of God while I was at a church Monday. I know, no one can be more shocked than I am that this happened on a Monday. Just kidding, there’s nothing wrong with a Monday. I often have to live through as many as three Mondays in one week. No, the real shocker was me in a church. Not that there’s anything wrong with a church, it’s just not my natural habitat. Also of note, people find God in churche...

  • Looking to the 68th legislative session

    Updated Dec 16, 2022

The 90-day marathon of issues and opportunities that will be the 2023 legislative session begins in two weeks. On the unique opportunity front, the excess federal stimulus dollars from D.C. fueled a large one- time surplus of state funds. I advocate treating these funds as a Montana business or homeowner would: 1) First, pay off expensive debt, 2) put some money away for a rainy day, 3) invest in key infrastructure for the future (roads, water, sewer, mental health facilities, nursing homes, schools …) and, 4) return some t...

  • Hold your lawmakers accountable

    Updated Dec 16, 2022

Your recently elected state representatives and senators are busy writing a new set of laws for you, our voters. December is a critical time to draft new bills and workshop policy, as we have less than two months between Election Day and Jan. 2, the start of the 2023 Legislative Session. This is the time to turn the concerns and ideas we heard on voters’ porches into bills that meet the needs of our communities. What bills has your legislator requested and what work are they preparing to do on your behalf? Are they f...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Beached in my backyard

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Dec 16, 2022

Christmas is a-coming soon and although there are only five couples and me in residence at the Rancho at present, plans are afoot and afloat for communal gatherings. Me, I’m trying to respectfully decline invitations while ignoring judgmental comments without cringing. I cringe. We all would prefer our friends to understand us, right, to support us unconditionally, right? Back-story first. When the COVID pandemic hit, most of us here masked, bought disinfectants and hand sanit...

  • Out Our Way: The Christmas chinook - Psalm 119:49-50

    Updated Dec 16, 2022

"Remember Your word to Your servant in which You made me hope. This is my comfort in my distress, that Your promise gives me life." Out our way, the winters can be brutal. Cold arctic winds sweep the hills and the plains while the sun rises late and sets early. You can understand why all those folks from LA who jumped at the lower housing costs in the Big Open last May are trying to sell out come February. That is not just "calving season" for ranchers, but sales season for re...

  • Pastor's Corner: Three little words

    Updated Dec 16, 2022

Sometimes, the holidays bring out the best in us. Sometimes they bring out the worst. When the anxious, stressed, depressed, snippy, snappy, or foul-mood you makes an appearance-whether in December or July-relationships can get taxed. Our relationships with parents, children, significant others, even with God, can suffer when our metaphorical demons come out to play. Samuel Wells is the vicar of the London church St. Martin-in-the-Fields (though this church isn't in the fields...

    Updated Dec 16, 2022

You know, Lord, the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Christmas, like preparing for guests and gifts, singing and visiting - it's all getting a little bit exhausting for all of us, old or young. Generally speaking, that's probably not what You meant how Christmas should be, right, Lord? One needs to stop a minute, get things into perspective, then prioritize and get a few things in order. While we're at it, how about savoring life just a little bit. Here are some...
