Havre Pride cleanup set for Sept. 11

For about 15 years now, Kim Cripps has led troops out to the streets and sidewalks of Havre each spring and fall to collect trash from the streets.

She will be at it again 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 11.

The fall Havre Pride day is aimed at sprucing up neighborhoods for Havre Festival Days, which will take place the next weekend.

Teams of people meet at the fire station and spread throughout the community to pick up trash. Bags will be provided, Cripps said.

"We're just asking people to come out and show their pride in Havre," said Cripps.

People can volunteer to pick up trash in their neighborhoods, or they can take part in efforts community-wide, she said.

She said people can also volunteer to supervise young people who are working off court-mandated community service as they go through neighborhoods, she said.

But people who don't participate in Havre Pride activities can still help by picking up trash whenever they see it, she said.

"You may not have put it there, but it's your responsibility to pick it up," she said. "Show your pride in Havre."

People from Recycle Hi-Line will be at the fire station to help participants as they bring in newspapers, magazines, cardboard, cans and bottles, she said.

Cripps reminded people to dress warmly and be sure to wear gloves and boots.

"If people come across anything that looks suspicious, don't pick it up, call me or call the police," she said.

In the past, people have found dead animals and even a meth lab, she said.

"There's no telling what you might find beneath the bushes," she said.

"We usually get a good number of volunteers," she said. "We hope we will again."

Cripps said anyone with questions should call her at 265-0905 or 265-5998.
