  • Yemen shows frictions with U.S. over terror fight

LEE KEATH SAN A Yemen AP

Yemen showed signs of friction today with the United States over the fight against al-Qaida, insisting it has the terror group under control, as the U.S. Embassy in San'a ended a two-day closure. Even as Yemeni forces have been hitting back against al-Qaida hideouts in recent days, comments by senior regime officials appear to reflect fears that Washington wants to snatch away the lead in directing the counterterror campaign. The government is deeply sensitive about appearing to be following an American lead before a populati...

AMY BETH HANSON Associated Press Writer HELENA

A sharply divided Montana Supreme Court has upheld a state law that requires someone planning to sue a bar over liability in a drunken driving crash to notify the bar within 180 days of the crash. The Supreme Court issued the 4-3 ruling on Dec. 23 in a lawsuit filed by C a r y a n d Terra Rohlfs over a June 2006 drunken driving crash that seriously injured Cary Rohlfs. The driver, Joseph Warren, had been drinking for much of the day at the Stumble Inn in Victor. The Rohlfs sued the bar just over a year after the crash,...

Just two days after both the Havre High boys and girls basketball teams faced a tough Great Falls High team, the Blue Ponies hand their hands full with an even tougher Class AA program. On Monday both Central A Pony squads faced the always tough Class AA CMR Rustlers. The HHS girls hosted the Rustlers and lost 52-34 at the Havre High gymnasium, and the HHS boys were on the road where they lost 78-44 in Great Falls. George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

With each passing week, the volleyball season becomes a little more heated. And this past weekend saw area volleyball teams take some important steps in preparing for the stretch run. This weekend's matches included the District 6C East Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds playing two doubleheaders in four days. On Tuesday, the T-Birds dropped a pair of matches to Chester/J-I. The Hawks won the first match by scores of 25-4, 25-10 and 25-5, while they bested the T-Birds by scores of 25-9, 25-19 and 25-13 in a much more competitive...

  • Hi-Line Football Roundup

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

Another weekend of Hi-Line football is in the books, and yet again, the wins and looses came by way of big deficits. The Northern C Chinook Sugarbeeters came close to pitching their second straight shutout on Friday. But still earning a huge win and playing in Chinook, the Beeters defeated the league leading and previously undefeated (5-0) Power-Dutton-Brady Titans 54-6. With the upset win the Beeters improved their league record to 4-1. The Titans only score came in the first quarter when Aable was able to punch in a four...

  • Pony golfers get tremendous experience at state

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Sometimes in sports, the biggest challenges are the best learning experiences. And that's what five Havre High golfers got this weekend at the Class A state golf tournament in Laurel. The Blue Ponies who qualified for the 36-hole state finale Friday and Saturday at the private Laurel Golf Club may have not turned in the scores they were hoping for, but they played their best and when it was all said and done, they came away with an invaluable experience. "Overall, I'm really happy with how this season went," Havre first-year...

  • Warburton is no photo-op backer of Second Amendment

Letter to the Editor: Gary Marbut, President Montana Shooting Sports A

Those candidates uncommitted to the right to bear arms always try to lure gun owning voters with the bait of a photo-op picture of the candidate holding a shotgun. Because they are not committed to the right to bear arms, such candidates think voters equate duck hunting with gun rights. They should be allowed to make that crucial mistake to help us sort out the good candidates from the others. Rep. Wendy Warburton has proven herself and earned her spurs with the gun rights community. She has a perfect voting record on gun...

  • CASA Volunteer backs Swandal for Supreme Court

Letter to the Editor — Gail McCormick, Volunteer CASA/GAL, Sixth

As a volunteer with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program, I strongly urge you to vote for Judge Nels Swandal in the upcoming Supreme Court election. In addition to helping create a CASA program for Park and Sweet Grass counties, Judge Swandal has always taken care to put the best interest of the child first when dealing with unfortunate cases of abuse and neglect. One case in particular stands out. In 2005, a repeat sex offender, Dean Randolph Jess, admitted to twice raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter. A...

  • Hansen, Hutton, Warburton back Second Amendment

It is always amusing to me — if it weren't so serious — the way the Democrats become concerned about the Second Amendment at election time. They all have pictures of themselves with game animals and holding firearms. But the whole truth is it is only for votes on an election year. "If you don't support gun control: Why do you vote for people that do? " I appreciate my candidates, Kris Hansen, Rowlie Hutton and Wendy Warburton, because they are committed to the Second Amendment, not just making a donation to the NRA: And they...

  • Kris Hansen is a person of integrity

Letter to the Editor — Judith Ellen Moody, Havre

As election time draws near, I'm reminded of how I like to become familiar with the candidates so that I can vote knowledgeably, instead of "just for a name" or for a party on a ballot. I would like to share with others what I have come to know about Kris Hansen, who is running for a House seat in District 33. Kris is a person of honesty, integrity and Godly values and is highly dedicated to whatever she commits. Her sense of fairness, coupled with her experience in and extensive knowledge of government and the law, make a...

  • A 'Tour de Havre' on the Hi-Line?

Letter to the Editor — Bob Waldron, Havre

To the readers of the Havre Daily News: Is there a future Lance Armstrong in the Havre area? I ask because I am a "new resident" here and a semi-athlete who likes to ride bikes in the area. I'm suggesting arranging a tour much like the Tour de France, which will happen next year from July 2 to 24 in France. May I suggest having a Tour de Havre anywhere in the immediate area. For those of us who like to ride bikes that will get us "newbies" out and about for an introduction to much of north-central Montana. I am a career Monta...
