    The trial of a Havre businessman accused of assaulting a man outside of a Havre tavern and causing permanent injury to him began in state District Court in Havre Tuesday with jury selection, opening arguments and the testimony of the first witnesses.   • Pedestrian killed near Harlem

    The Montana Highway Patrol reported that a Hays woman was killed on U.S. Highway 2 near Harlem at 11:39 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado while she was walking in a traffic lane. The Highway Patrol said that the 50-year-old woman, whose name had not been released this morning, was standing in the eastbound traffic lane when the eastbound Silverado struck her then continued on to the Fort Belknap Police Department.   • Charter schools a hot topic at video conference

    A flagship Republican bill proposing changing charter school regulation in Montana was part of the main topic at a legislative video conference in Havre Tuesday, just hours before the bill died in a nearly tie vote on its third reading. House Bill 315, proposed by Rep. Austin Knudsen, R-Culbertson, went down at 2:46 p.m. on a 49-50 vote. Rep. Clarena Brockie, D-Harlem, voted against the bill, while Rep.   • Gun advocates push bill expanding rights

    HELENA (AP) — Gun advocates are advancing several measures aimed at expanding gun rights. The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday took a second day of testimony on six bills backed by gun advocates. One of the measures allows concealed carry of weapons by anyone who would otherwise qualify for a permit. Supporters say concealed carry is currently allowed by anyone outside of city limits, a policy they argued has worked. They also want to allow concealed guns in currently prohibited places like bars.     BOZEMAN (AP) — Montana State University officials have approved a new policy expanding the ability of employees to donate unused sick leave to include women who miss work due to pregnancy.
