  • Picture reminds us that most kids are good, energetic

    Tristan

Editor: The picture in Wednesday's Havre Daily News of Thurman Holdsclaw and Katie Christianson enjoying their moment of glory at homecoming coronation prompted me to write this letter. The smiles on the faces of these two make me think about so many of our students who are good kids, full of energy, enthusiasm and promise. One often hears adults talk about "kids today" and wonder what has happened to our youth. But from my perspective, the vast majority of our kids are good kids, doing what they believe is right, just...

  • New band director brings enthusiasm to Havre games

    Tristan

Editor: I was very impressed by our band leader, Mr. Johnke, who brought back lots of enthusiasm to the game last Friday. Because the band played the whole game and it was great, the crowd, kids and players got fired up — heck, the band even cheered. The football boys picked up on the spirit of the band and the fans and the rest is history. Thanks gain, Mr. Johnke, it's great to have you here. Jo Jones Havre...

  • Wait a minute. What were we talking about?

    Pam Burke

I don't even have television and I'm counting down the days until Election Day ... or rather, the day after. Election Day is like Christmas Eve and the next day is the day off, the day of peace, the day of tranquility and togetherness. I'm so tired of the senseless, election-politics bickering that the day-after-Election-Day politics-as-usual will seem peaceful by comparison. Mostly, I'm tired of all the negative, nasty spin doctoring of everyone's words. When one group is...

  • Asian energy boom threatens Montana ranches

    Matthew Brown

ROUNDUP — The big mining companies first came knocking on Ellen Pfister's door in the 1970s, ready to tap the huge coal deposits beneath her family's eastern Montana ranch. Pfister and others successfully fended them off, and as the coal industry retreated domestically, it appeared their battle might be won. But now, a fast-growing market in exporting coal to Asia has Pfister and other ranchers seeing their long-held fears become reality. DAVID ESPO,AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney struggled to steady his presidential campaign on Friday, buffeted by an outbreak of sniping among frustrated Republicans, fresh evidence of a slide in battleground state polls and President Barack Obama's accusation that he was writing off "half the country" in pursuit of the White House. • Breaking Sports: Panthers run over Havre High on homecoming

    Tristan

Havre High's Zach Plum (left) tries to get away from Belgrade defenders during Friday night's Central A football game at Blue Pony Stadium. Two things spoiled the Havre Blue Ponies' homecoming game Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium - turnovers and an almost unstoppable Belgrade running attack. The Panthers reeled off 20 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Blue Ponies 32-7 in the Central A opener for both teams. Havre trailed just 12-0 after the first quarter, and 12-7 late in the third after Thomas Gruber caught...

Both teams open up Big Sky Conference play, at home with emotional homecoming games. The No. 2 Bobcats (3-0) host an underdog, but much-improved Northern Colorado squad Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium, while the No. 11 Griz (2-1) play arch rival Northern Arizona at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Though MSU...

  • HHS spikers fall to Eagles

    Daniel Horton

Thursday night didn't play out how the Havre High volleyball team had planned at all. Instead of recording a conference win in the Central A, the Lewistown Golden Eagles defeated the Blue Ponies in four games. Lewistown won game one 25-15, while the Ponies rebounded for a game two win by score of 25-17. But the Eagles capitalized yet again, beating the Ponies 25-20 and 25-14 in games three and four respectively. "I thought we were on the right track," Havre High head coach Melanie Skoyen said. "But hopefully this was just a...

  • Hi-Line teams ranked high

    George Ferguson

It's the heart of the football season, and once again, high school teams from the Hi-Line area are thriving. In this week's Montana Prep Power Polls, there are four area teams ranked, and all four will be in action over the weekend. The Chester/J-I Hawks are off to a perfect start to the 2012 season and ranked No. 2 in the latest Class C 8-Man Power Poll. • Skylights beat Bulldogs in a grueling five sets

    George Ferguson

Life on the road is never easy in the Frontier Conference. And the UM-Western Bulldogs made the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team's visit to Dillon especially difficult. But the Skylights came to Dillon on Thursday night on a three-match conference winning streak, and though they were pushed to the limit, they marched out of Dillon still unbeaten in conference play. Northern beat the Bulldogs in five grueling sets by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 23-25 and... Full story

  • MSU-N Game Day Feature: He's taking leadership head on

    George Ferguson

Football teams need leaders. Leaders who've been through things. Leaders who have risen above adversity. Leaders who can set an example through prior experiences. The Montana State University-Northern Lights have one of those leaders in senior Justin Montelius. Montelius, now a senior and a Northern team captain was a highly-touted two-way player at Missoula Big Sky in high school. He originally signed on to play with his hometown Montana Grizzlies, but eventually made his... Full story

  • Lights look to turn it around against Western

    George Ferguson

Right now, the Montana State University-Northern football team is feeling like a great baseball hitter in a slump. The Lights are close, but they can't seem to come up with the big base hit when they need it most. But after two straight losses by a combined four points on the road, the Lights are hoping the friendly confines of Blue Pony Stadium will be just what they need to break out. Northern (0-3, 0-3) hosts the UM-Western Bulldogs (1-2, 1-2) Saturday. Kickoff at Blue...

  • Jobless rate stable statewide, down on the Hi-Line

    John Kelleher

The number of people working in Montana went down in August, but the jobless rate also declined slightly, from 6.4 percent to 6.3 percent. Montana followed the national trend — fewer jobs and lower unemployment. This often happens because people get discouraged and leave the workplace. The national jobless rate fell from 8.3 percent to 8.1 percent during August. "Like last year, Montana's employment figures held steady during the summer months, " said Labor Commissioner Keith Kelly. "Overall, we expect Montana to continue its... Full story

  • Reward offered on Fresno vandalism

    Zach White

Havre Daily News/Zach White A few bits of the weekend's vandalism of the Fresno Pavilion remain on the back of the building Monday afternoon. A series of black, white and red markings, mostly the letters "XIV", were spray-painted on the building sometime Sunday night. The Fresno Chapter of Walleye's Unlimited, which built the pavilion, is offering $500 for a tip to the Hill County Sheriff's Office that leads to identifying the culprits. After someone vandalized the pavillion above Fresno Reservoir's main public beach over...

  • Havre annexation process to begin anew

    Zach White

The troublesome annexation problem which started several years ago came to an end at Monday night's Havre City Council meeting, after a few minutes of discussion and a unanimous vote. The vote brought a legal settlement to the lawsuit filed by several landowners west of Havre in 2010 against the city to stop the annexation process. The properties in question, if annexed, would have extended the city of Havre's border from the bottom of the hill near the water plant and Ezzie's Wholesale, where the limit is now, out over the...

  • How state redistricting will affect you

    Tim Leeds

The legislative House Districts approved by the state Districting and Apportionment Commission Friday will have some major impacts on who votes with whom, pending approval of the proposals by the 2013 Legislature. But how that will affect the makeup of the Montana Legislature itself after the 2014 elections is unclear. The commission, comprising two Republicans, two Democrats and a nonpartisan chair, approved new House district lines late Friday night after more than a year of preparation and holding public meetings and colle...
