  • Havre girls blow by Rocky Boy at home

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 12, 2018

To say that the Havre High girls basketball team has been starting fast this season is an understatement. The Blue Ponies' domination in the first quarter has been a key part of their undefeated record. And Thursday night in the HHS gymnasium, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars were the latest to fall victim to one of the Ponies' frenzied starts, as a 26-4 run early in the game, helped Havre blow out its closest rival 81-38. "Our kids' energy has just been fantastic," HHS head coach...

  • View from the North 40: Dam the weather, full comfort ahead

    Updated Jan 12, 2018

O, Canada, our friendly neighbors to the north, keep your lousy weather to yourself. You and your polite people seem like such greet-you-with-warm-cookies kind of friendly — right up to the point you decide to hammer us with back-to-back, arctic-wind driven storms. What’s up with that arctic weather? Eh? I was game for the first storm. I mean, it is winter. Cold and snow are expected at some point in the season — apparently our ecology relies on it and I’ve come to terms with that. Certainly, we needed something to put a s...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Jan 12, 2018

You know, Lord, watching it snow is fascinating as it falls or twirls around. There’s usually also ice! Oh! Look, more snowflakes falling. It’s told that a snowflake is an ice crystal from a super-cooled cloud! Remembering back when we were kids (on the ranch), we’d see awesome icicles, we’d see the water ponds near our house and think — frozen over with ripples on the surface?? How did that happen? On our east windows we’d see interesting frost fronds (frost resembling a leaf) and hoarfrost on the clothes line. Most fun wa...

  • The Scriptures on Finances - Let the scriptures be a light for the path on finance

    Updated Jan 12, 2018

Acts 20:35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” This scripture is well-known but perhaps not well-lived. In the following series of articles concerning money I will be using some material from Che Ahn’s book “The Grace of Giving.” I hope to encourage you to embrace and apply Biblical concepts to your finances. The goal is to encourage the Body of Christ to put into practice teachings that will demonstrate our obedience to Jesus and help conform our hearts to the will of our Father. I pray that one day each reader wh...

  • Out Our Way: I must decrease so that He may increase

    Updated Jan 12, 2018

Out our way, we are used to the reality that seasons change but life goes on. We see countless acres of farm land transformed from barren nothingness into fields of crops, and then back to barren nothingness again. Except it is never really barren. For we know it is part of the ongoing cycle. The empty fields of winter begin to sprout in the spring and through the summer the crops grow until the harvest. And then it starts all over again. Same with the pastures on the Tiger Ri...

  • Warriors turn away Skylights, Lights in Idaho

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 12, 2018

The Montana State University-Northern Skylights were in a shooting slump heading into their showdown with the seventh-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors Thursday night in Lewiston, Idaho. And while the No. 21 Skylights broke out of that slump, it still wasn't enough against the team that played for an NAIA national championship just nine months ago. The Warriors, who had lost their previous two Frontier Conference games, blitzed the Skylights for 30 points in the first quarter,...

  • ESPN began with a birth in Havre

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 12, 2018

Havre’s historical roots run deep, very deep. From the days of the dinosaurs, centuries of Native American history, the Wild West, Lewis and Clark, to James J. Hill and the railroad, the town is rich with history. That history also includes the most famous sports network in the history of television as well. Yes, that’s right. The roots of one of the most influential people in getting ESPN off the ground, and on the air, are embedded right here in Havre. In December, Get...
