Andrew Rolin may only be 30 years old, but in the college football coaching profession, he's not only already a veteran, he feels fully prepared to be a head coach. Now, Rolin's going to get that chance. Thursday afternoon, Rolin was named the new head coach of the Montana State University-Northern Lights. And, it's an opportunity he says was a lifetime in the making. "This is an opportunity I've worked for my entire career," Rolin, who currently resides in Libby said. "I've...

The results of the hunt, scheduled to begin Jan. 6 and take place in a 226-square mile area in the Sage Creek area, could have implications on next fall's hunting season, FWP reps said. The old adage “Feast or famine” applies to the Dec. 22, 1917, and Dec. 29, 1917 editions of The Havre Plaindealer. There was a lot of interesting local news in this week’s edition, and darn near next to nothing in next week’s issue. In the spirit of Christmas, let’s find out what is going on in Havre with respect to this very special holiday for this week, and we’ll get to other news, some being mayhem and questionable doings, next week. What was going on in the churches for Christmas services were found throughout...

  • Just in time for Christmas

    Updated Dec 22, 2017

For years, Washington has grown in its power and wealth while hardworking Americans have struggled to make ends meet. In fact, the nation’s most affluent counties are suburbs of Washington, D.C. Taxpayer dollars have padded the pockets of D.C. for far too long — enough is enough. Just in time for Christmas, I was honored to join Congress in passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This historic tax bill will lower rates for hardworking Montanans, boost higher wages and incentivize job creation. It will keep more than $700 mil...

  • Keeping more of what you earn

    Updated Dec 22, 2017

Santa came early for hardworking Montanans. Republicans have kept their promise to the American people and delivered tax reform that will let you keep more of what you earn. In just a couple of months, you’ll see more of your hard-earned money in your paychecks, families will have much needed relief, and small businesses can grow, invest, and create more Montana jobs. This was long overdue — actually 31 years overdue. The last time Washington reformed the tax code, Ronald Reagan was in the White House, and I had a full hea...

  • Populist economic charade ends - plutocracy wins

    Updated Dec 22, 2017

One-party passage of the GOP/Trump “Tax Scam” bill that pretends to aid the middle class while tilting the tax system more than ever to the benefit of the super-wealthy and corporations was the nail in the coffin of the populist charade Trump and the GOP leveraged to electoral victory in 2016. The reality in 2018 is that plutocracy once again reigns supreme under the GOP and Trump. Plutocracy is government by the wealthy. Populism is support for the concerns of ordinary people. The historical difference between Rep...

  • Undoing the tax cut damage will take more than a brake pedal

    Updated Dec 22, 2017

As a young high school American government teacher, I compared our system to an automobile that was useful if it could start, speed up, slow down and stop. When the people thought government needed to be more active, they elected liberal Democrats to press down on the accelerator. When people thought government’s role was getting too large and expensive, they elected Republicans to apply the brakes and slow things down. Our national debt is now $20 trillion and rising. That amounts to about $155,000 in tax liability for t...

  • View from the North 40: The Christmas one about miracles and lights

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 22, 2017

With a notoriously poor memory for the events of my childhood and a brain that seems to make stronger, longer-lasting neural links with negative memories than happy ones, it’s nothing short of a Christmas miracle that I have so many fond memories of this holiday from my younger years. Even before the annual hunt for the perfect tree came the package from my Grandma Inez with her version of an advent calendar: a wall hanging of burlap with a green felt Christmas tree. It had t...

  • OUT OUR WAY: Merry "What Mas"?

    Updated Dec 22, 2017

Out our way, Christmas is either a joyful or a frustrating time ... and sometimes both. For Goliath - aside from the reindeer antlers worn in honor of the Salvation Army bell ringers - Goliath tends to like this time of year. He doesn't have to work very hard, his heavy coat keeps him warm - and I do manage to get him and Babe an extra bucket of oats in honor of the season. Over at the Walmart where I work to support our ministry, I hear the laughter and excitement of...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Dec 22, 2017

Lord, just sharing: author and date, unknown. “Our inn was at the edge of town — we heard the noisy throng move down, and as they came I saw Pa frown. We heard a tired ‘Hello!’ call; a woman on a donkey small, the man adjusted her wool shawl. ‘We’ve traveled many miles this day; have you a room for us to stay? All inns are full on this tax day.’ “My Papa looked so sad at him. ‘We have no room and day grows dim.’ The man turned ’way with look so grim. The woman — no, a girl! — did sigh, it sounded like a muffled cry, to such a...

  • Doing what I do, it's kind of like Christmas every day of the year

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 21, 2017

When it comes to Christmas, I’m hardcore. Just ask my wife. It’s seems like every year, I put the lights on the house and the tree up a little earlier than I did the year before. And I still make an extensive Christmas list, though now it’s usually filled with golf and tennis items, instead of G.I. Joe’s and Star Wars toys. Yes, Christmas has always been special to me. As a student at St. Jude’s and Havre Central, I looked forward to the church being decorated, the Nativity,...
